Matt Healy X The Beehive in Thorner Review
The Beehive in Thorner is award-winning chef Matt Healy’s third venue in his hometown in just a year. The gastro-pub opened on Saturday, July 27th following a major £180,000 renovation, including brand new interiors, signage and lighting.
Matt shot to fame in 2016 when he was runner-up in MasterChef: The Professionals – with two-Michelin-starred judge Marcus Wareing famously describing one of Matt’s sauces as ‘one of the best he had ever tasted’.
Along with a sophisticated and modern bar area, diners can expect pub classics with a modern twist, such as The Beehive’s signature burger with Jamón Ibérico, moules marinière, deep-fried brie with onion jam and Chicken Kiev with Caesar salad.
Other dishes from the menu include whole baked seabass with pickled ginger, soy and coriander and Moroccan lamb flatbread with harissa yoghurt, pickled red cabbage and soft herbs.
Matt and his team at Seventh Course Ltd have already seen success at their restaurants Grön Kafe in Oakwood and Matt Healy x The Foundry in the city’s South Bank area, which was named Best City Centre restaurant at the Oliver Awards, Newcomer of the Year at the Yorkshire Life Food and Drink Awards, and also the title of Britain’s Best Roast Dinner.
Whilst the ‘nowt fancy’ ethos is literally up there in lights at The Beehive in Thorner, you most definitely feel as though you’ve been catapulted into a classy yet quirky bar and restaurant in the centre of Leeds, rather than a gastropub in a quiet suburb. Everything from the décor, staff and menu is highly impressive, paying attention to serving unconventional pub classics.
Some foodie highlights from our recent visit to The Beehive included home-made ham terrine served with a beautifully cooked quail egg and a tart pineapple salsa to cut through the natural saltiness. Another hit from the menu, salt cod croquettes with Bloody Mary aioli. Perfectly crisp on the outside but flaky and fluffy in the middle.
Onto mains, baked halibut is served nestled upon a chorizo and chickpea stew, flavoured and cooked to perfection and then there’s the Beehive burger; a staple of any gastropub menu. Topped with melted Gruyere cheese, chorizo and onion relish and served within a toasted brioche bun, this burger offers you texture from coarse yet succulent meat, smokiness from the diced chorizo and of course a warmth that only melted cheese can provide.
The Beehive is the current place to be seen; an upmarket local that is already attracting regular full houses. It’s not hard to be captivated by the modern interiors, brass topped bar and classic pub food with that Matt Healy signature twist, and it’s certainly made its mark as the ‘hive’ of Thorner.
