Prashad named Yorkshire restaurant top pick in Hairy Biker’s new BBC show

Prashad restaurant near Leeds named Yorkshire restaurant top pick in Hairy Biker’s new BBC show

The vegetarian Indian restaurant, which started out at a deli in Bradford, moved to its current home in Drighlington, Leeds in 2012 and recently celebrated 30 years in business.

Husband-and-wife co-owners, Bobby and Minal Patel, and their team are back on television screens this month, featuring in the new BBC series ‘Hairy Bikers Go Local’.

In the eight-episode series, which airs on BBC Two, TV chefs Si King and Dave Myers visit their top restaurant picks throughout the UK, as they play matchmaker with innovative local suppliers. “We were so excited to be invited on to the show, and chosen to represent Yorkshire,” says Bobby Patel, who co-owns Prashad alongside his wife, Prashad’s Head Chef, Minal Patel. “Being able to share our Gujarati food with people is such a gift, and to have it recognised again, by two chefs we really admire, is a testament to the hard work of Minal and the team.”

Prashad Indian Cookery Demonstration Day

The food at Prashad tells the story of the Patel family’s lives from India to West Yorkshire, with Gujarati recipes handed down through the family, made with the best produce Yorkshire has to offer.

Prashad-Tasting-Menu

“It was an honour to serve up my tasting menu for Si and Dave” said Head Chef Minal. The seven-course, vegetarian tasting menu features Prashad favourites, like the Masala Dosa, and twists on traditional dishes, with simple samosas transformed into crisp, cone-shaped ‘Sanku’. “You’ll have to watch the show to see their full verdict, but the whole team left with full tummies and huge smiles, which is the experience we want everyone to have at Prashad.”

Featured in the Michelin Guide every year since 2014

The Hairy Bikers source mushrooms, rhubarbs, and beetroots for Prashad, to make garlic mushroom pakoras, beetroot-stuffed paratha, and rhubarb, rose, and cardamom kulfi. The BBC’s episode guide shares how Bobby and Minal have “built up a loyal customer base, winning a host of awards along the way”. It also details how they have their eyes on a bigger prize – a coveted Michelin star.

“Michelin Stars are the pinnacle of success for a chef. We’ve been featured in the Michelin Guide and awarded a Bib Gourmand every year since 2014, where Michelin inspectors recognise top-quality food with great value for money (so you won’t find a hefty £££ price tag for our tasting menu at Prashad).

We’re one of only two restaurants in Yorkshire to be awarded a Bib Gourmand in 2023, and there are less than 100 restaurants in the UK that hold the prestigious title. A star would be the next step up for us, and it’s something we’re always working towards, fusing the latest fine-dining techniques with our Gujarati heritage.”

The restaurant, which began life on Bradford’s Horton Grange Road, recently celebrated 30 years in business. Prashad shot to fame when it was runner-up in Gordon Ramsay’s 2010 television programme Ramsay’s Best Restaurant.

The episode of Hairy Bikers Go Local, starring Prashad, premiers Wednesday 11th January at 8 pm, on BBC TWO.
