Steel Yard Sheffield – The Residency Sheffield –

Steel Yard Sheffield Revels Innovative Residency Restaurant

Showcasing a mix of independent businesses with a MasterChef behind an innovative food and drink concept.
With the team behind Sheffield’s Steel Yard releasing little teasers about what we can expect from the new development, we caught up with them to get the low down.
Located on Bardwell Road near Sheffield’s popular Kelham Island and made from upcycled shipping containers, the large site will be home to 56 new independent businesses. The food and drink offering is set to excite the people of Sheffield and beyond, with the concept of ‘The Residency’. Headed up by MasterChef 2016 quarterfinalist Chris Hale, who has experience in numerous pop-up events, The Residency will see different chefs taking over the 40-seater restaurant each month.

Chris Hale said: We are incredibly excited to open Residency as a great addition to the Yorkshire food scene. As a chef whose main experience is in running pop up restaurants, I love the experience it provides and how excited people get for a one-off experience, knowing you won’t be able to come back and have that same menu again.
We feel that people’s dining habits have changed, long gone are the days of people heading back to their local Italian week in, week out. People are more adventurous and looking to try new things constantly. We plan on having a different restaurant/chef take over each month to provide a new, different and exciting menu.
Also, I have met some incredibly talented chefs on my travels, who dream of opening a restaurant, but it’s such a huge step, so we are excited to help bridge that gap and give them a platform to showcase their skills!
For the first week of The Residency’s opening, Chris Hale will be heading up the kitchen, with talk of chefs from Yorkshire’s leading restaurants and supper clubs to follow. Next door to The Residency, which is located on the top floor, is Steel Bar, an 18sq roof garden, which aims to be a breakout area for the business, but also as an outdoor open roof or covered events space. Could this be Sheffield’s best beer garden?
If this wasn’t enough Urban Pizza Company and a vegan café are also among the new residence, as well as talk of an outdoor drive-through cinema and pop up market space in the courtyard area, a tattoo parlour, yoga lounge, childcare provider, dog groomer and male barbers.
Martin McGrail, Managing Director of MyContainer who is known for his work on Sheffield’s Krynkl is not stopping at Steel Yard. A third development near Sheffield city centre’s Division Street is also in the pipeline. With the approximate opening date of May 2018, we’re so excited to follow the journey of this development and the impact it will have not just in Sheffield but Yorkshire’s food scene.
