Sheffield has quite the reputation on the food scene for quirky independent eateries, and if you’re anything like us, discovering somewhere new will excite you very much. So, foodies of Yorkshire, you will be happy to hear that there’s yet another fantastic new place to kick back and enjoy some seriously good food.
Silversmiths have recently undergone a bit of a transformation, re-establishing itself as a Sheffield staple. The new owners re-opened the restaurant in October 2019, completely rebranded with fresh menus, styling and new Executive Head Chef Ashley Bagshaw. Thanks to Ashley and the kitchen team, the standard of food they’re producing is amazing, showcasing the finest ingredients and mind-blowing concepts that brings another great addition to Sheffield’s bustling restaurant scene.
The Location
Situated on Arundel Street, Silversmiths is conveniently placed in an up-and-coming area of the city centre, near the train station, the famous Crucible Theatre and a short walk from the stunning Peace Gardens. With the building dating back to the prime of Sheffield’s metal works, it comes with character and history that have been brought through to the modern-day.
Unsurprisingly, the building used to be a silversmith, with many practitioners forming exquisite silver objects within its walls. Though the space has come a long way since its debut as a metal works, the values the craftsmen used to hold have found their way through to the restaurant today.
The Ethos
There is still a fixation on producing things of great quality, and of championing the things that come out of Yorkshire. Silversmiths take great pride in using produce from local farms and suppliers, not only because it’s fantastic to support the locals, but the food they produce is of such high quality it would be foolish not to.
Silversmiths have cultivated a wonderful balance between relaxed dining in stylish surroundings, and really good food that would suit the biggest celebrations. If you’re not a fan of stuffy dining, if you like cosy corners and good music, then Silversmiths is the perfect place. The space is small enough to feel intimate, and with the bar as the centrepiece of the restaurant, it will be difficult to forget all of the exciting drinks options they also have on offer! We tried a Passion Fruit Spritz, a refreshing and delicious drink that was the perfect start to the meal.
The Menu
Speaking to Head Chef Ashley, it’s clear that using the best ingredients is a top priority for him. The menu largely features produce from Yorkshire; meat, veg and fruit are sourced from farmers and suppliers nearby, creating a menu that celebrates the local area and tastes flipping fantastic for doing so. The dishes on the menu are a wonderful blend of well-known classics done to an exceptional standard and new, exciting twists for those after something a bit different. Ashley spoke about his love for Asian flavours in particular, and the new menu has splashes of Asian influences and exotic ingredients, not to mention the different cooking techniques used to create such mouthwatering food.
I had the Yuzu Kosho Hand Dived Scallops to start, the scallops light and sharp, and served with apple, dill and pork belly. I would definitely recommend this starter, it was different and exciting and made me expect big things from the main course. The scallops together with the passion fruit spritz aperitif were are a match made in heaven.
My dining partner had a stunning looking plate of whipped goats cheese bonbons, served with delicately fermented, roasted and pickled beetroot. A classic combination of flavours taken to a whole new level. Onto the main courses, thankfully my expectations were exceeded again.
I opted for the Locally Sourced Lamb Rump, served with Konro lamb rib on the side (which was stunning, it fell off the bone and was a great mix of textures), red cabbage, mint, fondant potato and jus. This was a delicious dish, the lamb juicy and full of flavour, the colours of the dish packing a punch along with the blend of strong but perfectly balanced flavours.
On the other side of the table, BBQ pork fillet, another perfectly cooked piece of meat, with butter-like texture. Served with a generous chunk of slow-roasted pork belly, pork ragu, potato cake and a sharp, citrus apple gel to balance the rich, meaty flavours.
Although our starter and main course portions had nearly finished us for the night we couldn’t resist sampling puddings after two fabulous courses. For dessert, I opted for the Ice Cream Sandwich, a mix of peanut and chocolate ice cream served between a thin waffle, topped with crunchy peanut brittle. If anyone is giving marks for presentation alone this was a straight 10/10. I’m not a massive sweet tooth so the ice cream sandwich was the perfect mix of big, bold flavours without being overly sweet.
My guest for the evening is most definitely more of the sweet fan so opted for the sticky toffee pudding. I have to say I was more than a little jealous when it arrived.
A great chunk of moist, rich sponge, smothered in a sticky toffee sauce, served with a scoop of Yorkshire Tea icecream and a crisp brandy snap biscuit. Aside from the food utilizing the best local producers, it’s ethos even makes it’s way to the drinks. With Sheffield’s finest Forge Coffee making an appearance in our delightful espresso martinis to finish the night.
Silversmiths Sheffield Review – Final Thoughts
It’s very exciting that Silversmiths is adding so much to Sheffield’s food scene just months after their re-opening. With lots on the table – like their Sunday lunch menu which just keeps soaring in popularity, talks of tasting menu evenings in the not too distant future, and the menu constantly being perfected. Silversmiths have hit the ground running since their new ownership. If you’re looking for somewhere that really does it all: quality food, great booze, atmosphere, service – perfect for celebrations, date nights, mid-week pick-me-ups or relaxed Sunday lunches – get yourself down to Silversmiths in Sheffield, because this hidden treasure isn’t staying hidden for long!
