Pearly Cow York Review | A celebration of land and sea

Pearly Cow York Review: The city of York has long been known for its cosy haunts and romantic spots which is perhaps why fine dining restaurant, Pearly Cow, has found a home for itself in the historic centre.

No 1 Guesthouse York Hotel Front

You’ll find Pearly Cow restaurant nestled in a quiet street, just a ten-minute walk from the iconic York Minster, in a beautiful Georgian boutique hotel, No.1 GuestHouse.

Step inside and you’ll be met with a space that’s full of warm character, where art and pantry produce hang. We visited on a sleepy Sunday evening, and were surprised to be met with a restaurant full of diners.

We began our visit with some pre-dinner cocktails, a classic Margarita and an old fashioned. Both were expectedly delicious and we knew that, with the rest of the evening ahead of us, we were in for a treat.

The Pearly Cow menu showcases a celebration of the land and sea and is split into two sections, ‘fire’ and ‘ice’.

The first contains an array of local meat and fish sourced from Yorkshire family farm, R&J, and Hartlepools renowned fishmongers, Hodgson Fish. On this side of the menu you’ll find 45 day salt aged steaks, a rack of Yorkshire lamb, and a hazelnut crusted halibut.

The latter holds a selection of smaller plates such as poached lobster with mango and basil, and the restaurant’s signature dish, ‘The Pearly Cow’. Of course, we had to try this 45-day aged fillet of beef tartare with Exmoor caviar, Oyster Cream, and Charred Sourdough. With its delicate yet punchy flavours, it’s easy to see why this dish has been given its signature standing.

Our server recommended the Salted Cod and Crab Tacos, which were fresh and full of flavour. But perhaps the star of the show was the 36 oz salt-aged Cote de Boeuf which was served with both peppercorn and Bearnaise sauce, glazed onions and bone marrow.

We accompanied ours with seasonal greens and beef fat chips. Word to the wise, do not leave without trying these ‘chips’. Pressed layers of thin potato cooked in beef fat make for a deep, rich flavour with just the right amount of crisp.

Though fit to burst, when a dessert menu was presented to us with the option of a Raspberry Souffle, we of course had to try it. We were informed by our server that the preparation of this dessert would take 25 minutes.

After just one mouthful, we knew that it had certainly been worth the wait. The souffle was light and airy, exactly as it should be, with a firm crust. Whilst the accompanying sauce was sweet, tart and filled with fresh berry flavour.

Pearly Cow have clearly mastered their offering of both raw and flame-cooked fresh produce. With a mission to celebrate what hails from the dales, moors, vales, and the nearby North Sea, their propensity for sourcing high-quality, local produce translates into a menu which can only be seen as a love letter to the north of England and its bountiful land and sea.

Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion, or simply in search of a romantic evening for two, look no further than this beautifully intimate dining spot.
