8 must-visit Michelin pubs in Yorkshire

When it comes to good pubs in Yorkshire, it’s no secret that we’re pretty spoilt for choice. In fact, sometimes the sheer amount of gorgeous pubs on offer can be overwhelming. Happily for us, Michelin has just released a list of 8 Michelin pubs in Yorkshire – and they are all absolute stunners.
So, if you’re not quite sure which pub in Yorkshire to visit next, why not give one of these a go.

The Alice Hawthorn Inn
This village gastropub with 12 stunning bedrooms overlooks the green of Nun Monkton. Originally called The Bluebell Inn, the site has been a pub ever since 1787. Under new ownership as of 2013, owners Kate and Richard Harpin have turned this country watering hole into a Michelin-recommended Yorkshire pub with some tender loving care.
Find local cask ales from Yorkshire Heart, based just outside the village where the pub is located, as well as delicious meals made using local produce.
Michelin says: “As picture-perfect Yorkshire villages go, Nun Monkton – situated between Harrogate and York – takes some beating. The Alice Hawthorn Inn started life in 1781 as The Bluebell and was later renamed after a successful racehorse, which was itself named after the daughter of the local blacksmith. Inside, it oozes charm and character, while the newer garden rooms show a contrasting contemporary edge. Be sure to order something from their Mibrasa charcoal oven.
“This smartly modernised dining pub sits on a large village green where, as well as a duck pond, you’ll find the country’s tallest maypole. Hearty, well-presented dishes have classical roots and showcase local and garden produce. Welcoming service and smart bedrooms complete the picture.”

The Durham Ox
This 300-year-old British alehouse in North Yorkshire is another Michelin-recommended Yorkshire pub well worth visiting. Owned by the same family, The Ibbotsons, ever since 1999, you’ll find B&B and self-catering accommodation on site here alongside a brilliant kitchen and bar serving up Yorkshire’s finest.
The Michelin-recommended pub is also dog-friendly with dogs accepted in the taproom and some of its bedrooms.
Michelin says: “It would be hard to envisage Owner Michael Ibbotson not being the face of the 17th century Durham Ox – and he certainly knows how to run a successful pub. The cooking is hearty and original, the specials are well worth a look and be sure you leave room for dessert. The building overlooks the Vale of York and the homely bedrooms in adjoining outbuildings make an excellent base for visiting nearby Castle Howard and Helmsley.
“A 300 year old pub in a sleepy hamlet; in summer, head for the lovely courtyard. Menus focus on honest, homely cooking, with everything made on-site; choose a blackboard special – often game or seafood accompanied by something ‘wild’. Cosy bedrooms feature original brickwork and quarry tiling.”

Pipe and Glass
This one Michelin-starred Yorkshire pub offers luxury boutique accommodation, a traditional bar and dining area with local real ales and hearty grub – plus its own exclusive private dining suite.
Located on the site of the original gatehouse to Dalton Hall, reservations are not needed to dine in its bar area which is fitted out with old oak beams and serves up two regular ales: Black Sheep Best Bitter and Wold Top InnSpire.
What Michelin says: “The Pipe and Glass is a destination dining pub which has continued to grow and mature over the years, without forgetting what lies at its heart – the cooking. Devoid of gimmicks and clever tricks, the kitchen uses prime local produce in dishes created with obvious passion and skill. Add to this genuine hospitality and some luxurious bedrooms, and you have the ultimate in Yorkshire pubs.
