When the sun shines on a summer’s day, there’s nothing more pleasurable than dining outside with your favourite folk and enjoying a chilled glass of wine, in the surroundings of a beautiful English country garden.
The Black Swan Hotel, well-regarded for its fine dining restaurant and traditional afternoon teas, has a seasonal Tearoom menu of yummy brunches, lunches and light bites, which can also be enjoyed ‘al fresco’ in the hotel’s pretty walled gardens, overlooking the Churchyard, or even in the garden’s glorious oak gazebo. Hand-crafted from local timbers, it’s a sheltered spot, and comforting to know that it has optional heaters too!

The Tearoom starts serving at 10am, and morning fayre includes classic breakfast dishes such as scrambled eggs with oak smoked Scottish salmon, and eggs Benedict which can be enjoyed until 11.30am. Between 12 noon and 3pm, lunch dishes include hearty braised Yorkshire ox cheeks, Bourguignon with smoked Alsace bacon, Paris brown mushrooms and pomme purée, or roast skrei cod, sautéed morcilla Iberica, crushed potatoes, peas & broad beans, and Romesco sauce, or for the more traditional Yorkshire taste, beer battered line-caught haddock with real chips fried in beef dripping and mushy peas.
Delicious sandwiches made from artisan breads, and light bites such as double baked mature Isle of Mull cheddar soufflé, or oak smoked salmon on wholemeal blinis, with chive crème fraîche, are served until 5pm.
Traditional afternoon teas, or just good old-fashioned tea and cake, are always a popular choice at the hotel, and are served until 5pm – there’s no better way, to while away a summer’s afternoon.

The gazebo can be pre-booked for parties of 10 for Sunday lunch or on an evening, making it a perfect choice for a summer special occasion, such as a birthday party or engagement meal. With its twinkling fairy lights in the roof, it takes on a magical atmosphere after twilight, and more decorations such as fresh floral displays can be pre-arranged with the hotel’s events team, to create an extra special spot for your dinner party.
