Akbars Tributes: Popular Yorkshire Restaurateur Dies Aged 56

‘Popular Yorkshire businessman, who founded the Akbar’s restaurant chain, has died at the age of 56.

Shabir Hussain, known for his invention of the ‘hanging naan’, opened his first restaurant in Bradford in 1995 before expanding his business across the North and the Midlands.

The Akbar’s restaurant group quickly made its name as one of the leading authentic Indian restaurants in the region, opening sites in cities such as Leeds, Manchester, Sheffield, Middlesborough, Rotherham and Newcastle.

All sites are temporarily closed until Friday 18th October following the announcement of their founder’s death.

Announcing on social media, the Akbar’s Restaurant group said “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Shabir Hussain, founder of Akbars Restaurant Group. All restaurants will now be closed and will reopen on Friday 18th October at 5 pm.

Please remember Shabir Hussain in your prayers. May Allah (SWT) grant him the highest rank in Jannah and bring peace and strength to his family during this difficult time.”

Amongst the many tributes paid for the Akbar’s restaurant founder was Labour MP for Bradford West Naz Shah, stating on social media “Deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Shabhir Hussian founder & CEO of the Akbars group in Bradford.

A huge loss to his family and the world of business not just in Bradford but across the UK as his brand reached many cities.”
