Bundobust Leeds Review

No trip to Leeds is complete without a pitstop to one of the cities much-loved bar come restaurants, Bundobust. When we heard on the foodie grapevine some of their favourite specials had taken permanent residency on their extensive menu alongside a few new cocktails we knew we had to arrive early!

Win a meal for two at Bundobust, devouring six of their new dishes and your first round of drinks included. Enter here.

Braving the freezing conditions outside was definitely well worth it, as soon as the door swung open the aroma of heat and spice greeted us like an old friend. Luckily we managed to grab the last table on a busy Saturday afternoon. Relaxed dining, packed with a mix of families and friends the atmosphere was buzzing.

For anyone whos only encounter with Indian food is the one sauce fits all oil slick kinda offering, then Bundobust’s fresh take on vegetarian Indian street food will make you never think of lamb bhuna again.
There’s an ever-impressive selection of craft beers that sit like a marriage made in heaven alongside the food served up, but today we decided to start the weekend right with a few cocktails. Again, perfectly created to compliment the food. Both the Desi 75, a prosecco cocktail with Sipsmith sloe gin, lemon and cinnamon syrup, and the dirty Lopez tasted great but the latter really hit the spot. Appleton’s white rum shaken with mango, pineapple, coconut and lime to get the taste buds flowing for our spicy feast.

With such variety on the menu and also the new additions we decided to order some of the recent specials and house favourites taking up their new place on the menu.
Shortly arriving to the table, pots of tasty goodness each packing their own distinctive flavour punch. Starting with the deeply rich, Chole Saag.  Their take on a traditional curry. Tender chickpea and spinach masala with a gentle hint of heat and served with a light pillowy puri to mop up the sauce.

Raghda Pethis, our next dish had our minds blown by the initial thoughts then delicious aftertaste. As said on the menu, India meets the north could not be a better description.  Lightly spiced mushy peas and potato cake topped with crunchy turmeric noodles, fresh tomato and red onion, finished with super fruity tamarind chutney. In my head, it didn’t work but in my mouth this dish was incredible. A strong contender for best dish of the day.

Close second but still, an absolute winner would have to be the Paneer Kadai. Generous chunks of paneer cheese (not too dissimilar to halloumi for all you paneer virgins out there) served with a decadent spicy tomato red pepper sauce with cinnamon and fenugreek. Served with more bhatura Flatbread to mop up the sauces.

Last but definitely not least the unbelievable gobi mushroom Mancunian. Mushroom and cauliflower pakoras drenched in an Indo Chinese fusion of a sauce. Any Chinese food lovers dipping their proverbial toe in the Bundo menu, you have to try these. Finished with finely sliced spring onion to add another hit of taste and texture.
Such a great way to start the weekend sampling the new drinks and food from Leeds much loved Bundobust. It’s no wonder they’ve gained such a legion of fans since opening their first permanent spot on Mill Hill in 2014. It’s an example of what makes Leeds great, a celebration of food that packs a punch which drinks that are just as good. I’ll be back for that Vada Pav.
