Leeds is bursting at the seams with good places right now. Each one selling its own unique twist on fantastic food and drink. The Electric Press houses one such place, Epernay Champagne Bar.
Housing the largest collection of champagne in the north of England, our warm welcome from those at Epernay Leeds was initiated by what they do best, champagne. We settled down to our seats but not before we looked through the glass door housing the cellar of bubbles for which this place is best known for. The staff were extremely friendly, even offering a visit inside to experience the cold temperatures and make stake to their claim. They were not wrong; there is a serious amount of champagne available here.
Unsweetened and dry, rose or vintage, there simply is no ending to the flavours on offer. Sitting alongside the father of champagne, Don Perignon is sharing a menu with others like the podium circuit G.H Mumm and non-vintage, Krug and Churchill’s favourite Pol Roger to name just a very few.
Prices are expensive here, but that is to be expected for anywhere selling bottles of the highest order. House wines like the Montaudon make things more reasonable for those not prepared to be paying big for their bottle of fizz, as does Champagne a le Verre (by the glass). We were drinking Cremant, a spectacularly dry wine heralding from France and one that is a serious contender for champagne and the prosecco enthusiasts. New to their menu, Epernay were proud to share this with us. Reasonably priced cocktails alongside it brunch menu, sharing boards, nibbles and usual coffee and tea, Epernay Leeds makes for an excellent visit.
General Manager Jon Grasty commented, “We want somewhere people can relax and enjoy without having to be heard over loud music, we want people to enjoy coming here.” Having worked elsewhere, he was very clear on a vision which he was only too keen to share. This, I couldn’t agree more. Our night was fantastic.
One other thing is for sure, Epernay are serious about champagne and making sure they stand proud in Leeds as somewhere offering its very own unique twist.
