Exciting new plans for West Yorkshire’s fabulous baking sisters at ‘Bake My Day’
//= get_the_date( 'dS F Y' ); ?>Since opening their doors in 2015 ‘Bake My Day’ sisters Ellie and Emma Cawthra have been impressing customers with their range of delicious offerings, all served from their cosy corner shop just a few minutes from Castleford’s town centre.
Coming runners up at this month’s Observer Food Monthly (OFM) Awards as ‘Best Cheap Eats’ in the North, self-taught bakers Ellie and Emma said “We have always baked and cooked for each other and for our families and friends, always receiving really positive feedback. Our friend asked us to cater for her wedding, she wanted an afternoon tea affair. We were thrown in at the deep-end but the comments people made and the experience itself encouraged us to do it professionally. So when our kids started school it seemed like the right thing to do.” They first gained two years’ experience trading at local farmers markets and events such as the Leeds Corn Exchange, Leeds Waterfront Festival and Elsecar Heritage Centre to name a few, before opening in their permanent location.
Their high social following, passion, creativity and quirky approach has resulted in visitors coming from further afield to experience their bakes, including gluten free and vegan options.
The size of their current shop is minimal for customers and for them as everything sold at the premises is made and baked in store. However what they have achieved in this space has not held them back. They offer a range of cakes that often follow themes to keep their counter looking different every time. When we visited it was a take on the shop ‘Lush’ with an incredible display of cakes and flavours to highlight the theme such as ‘Dragon’s Egg’ cake and ‘Unicorn Horn’ meringues. Also on offer are homemade scones, savoury bakes, fresh pasta salads, sandwiches, coffee from a local roaster and soft drinks from Leeds Shed Soda, not to mention their incredible eat in or take away Afternoon Teas on offer, plus Tashteroon Teas for the gents! Afternoon Teas have to be ordered in advance due to the detail and care that goes into them. Not your ordinary afternoon tea, they can also be themed for your occasion, for example their ‘Cocktail Themed Afternoon Tea’ which included mini mojito and cosmopolitan cupcakes. Their take away boxed Afternoon Tea includes cutlery and tea bags so all you need is hot water and your cup!

They also offer outside catering for wedding and other events, with them already being booked up next year so you have to get in there quick! From cakes to full catering e.g. ploughman’s lunches, charcuterie boards with their homemade soda bread, Yorkshire pudding wraps, donut stall and more.
As well as baking the sisters also love to cook, some previous menu items include homemade flatbreads and Moroccan curry, to Chinese dumplings. Everything is made fresh, whilst visiting they had homemade sausage rolls in the oven, also prepared a range of ciabatta sandwiches and fresh pasta salad with beetroot, orange, feta and basil.
The sister’s decision to move premises which is actually across the road in a much larger unit, was to provide more space for customers to sit in, more kitchen space for them to really show off their culinary skills and move forward with their new ideas. As well as continuing with that they do best, their exciting plans include the introduction of Gin and Craft Beer, monthly supper clubs, as well as laptop docks, free WIFI and music to make their new location a social community hub, as a place to meet friends, work or enjoy a special evening.
Ellie said “We get people saying that we should be in Leeds but we think Castleford deserves it and it works here.” After what they have achieved within their small space, their move to new larger premises next month is only going to lead to more success from Ellie and Emma. Follow them across social media to keep an eye out on their relocation and new offerings.
