Issho Leeds Review: Sampling Leeds New Stunning Japanese Rooftop Restaurant
Since its arrival last year, Victoria Gate in Leeds has shown itself to be one of the North’s go to places for high end retail. To compliment this experience and what has certainly been missing until now, is a fine dining elegance to match. Enter, Issho, Leeds newest and best Japanese rooftop bar and restaurant.
The jewel in Victoria Gate’s crown is equally stunning as it is spectacular. Headed up by Executive Chef, Ben Orpwood, Issho provides fine dining indulgence which simply won’t disappoint. From a rooftop terrace above, diners are invited to try an extensive list of drinks. Upon arriving at Issho we were immediately handed a fine looking, crisp and superbly refreshing tanqueray gin and sake Yuzu Bramble cocktail. Like its cocktails, the wine list isn’t short on choice either. Japanese inspired in places but internationally welcomed in others, there are appearances from Moet and Chandon to a local sparking 2010 West Sussex Nyetimber Classic Cuvee.
Food at Issho cannot be underestimated. Ben Orpwood has crafted a menu which provides truly authentic yet modern Japanese cuisine. From crackers with a pea guac to the steamed edamame. Above all and like its drinks earlier, this food was as good to look at as it was to eat. Delicately styled, look no further than the tomato salad with whipped tofu sherry vinegar and sesame. There is simply something for everyone here whether you are new to Japanese food or not. For instance, we tried the 200g rib-eye steak. Those “melt in the mouth” moments are hard to come by, the rib-eye steak did exactly that. Served with a smoked shiso béarnaise, umami butter and Issho steak sauce, the taste was nothing short of incredible.
Like the food which had come before it, the chilled Yorkshire rhubarb and Granny Smith and sake sorbet dessert quickly had everyone’s approval. Fighting with spoons, our approval of excellence was fast matched with the frozen yuzu meringue cheesecake and the oozing special chocolate and matcha pudding.
Before we left, we each shared a pouring and toasting of sake wine, customary in Japan that an experience like this should not be shared alone. Issho, meaning “together”, lived up to its name in sensational fashion. If you eat anywhere in Leeds soon, make sure it is Issho.
Issho officially opens at Victoria Gate on the 21st June 2017. Booking is now open at www.issho-restaurant.com or alternatively call 0113 426 5000.
