With the weather being hotter than the med here in sunny Yorkshire over recent weeks, the search for the perfect beer garden or al fresco dining took us back to an old favourite on a glorious Friday evening. Upon hearing about the new summer menu at one of Wakefield’s best suburban restaurants, Lakeside Café and Bistro overlooking the picturesque Newmillerdam, we were counting down the hours come Friday morning.
The daytime menu at Lakeside Café sees the very best breakfast and brunch dishes served up alongside a mouth-watering array of sandwiches, salads, sharing platters and their ever-popular afternoon tea. You’ve only got to look at Lakeside’s Instagram to see that this little place has a huge personality with beautiful cocktails, generous portions of avo on toast and happy pooches sat at their owner’s side in their outdoor seating area. They’ve really got their all-day dining down to a t with a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, where you can tuck into a boozy brunch with friends or a perfect romantic date night destination. Their new evening menu brings together some of the best local and season ingredients with a set two, or three-course menu for a very reasonable £25 – £29 served on Fridays and Saturdays. For seasoned Lakeside fans you’ll see an obvious difference with their new menu, the dishes are refined with standout ingredients.
We opted to start with Wye Valley Asparagus served with a rich creamy truffled brie and Parma ham fondue, together with a generous Fillet of Beef Carpaccio, rocket leaves and parmesan shavings. Perfect for a summer evening with a glass of wine.
There’s a fabulous selection of dishes throughout the new evening menu so mains took a good while to choose from. With plenty of choice for vegetarians, steak lovers or anyone looking for a light, healthy option too.
Once again impressed when our mains arrived, deciding on the Chargrilled Tuna Steak Nicoise, served with pan-fried jersey royals, baby gem lettuce and a soft poached egg. Keeping with the seafood selection, another delicious main, this time Pan Fried Seabass on a bed of chilli and ginger wild rice, served with a seared sesame and bok choi salad. Both dishes cooked and presented to perfection.
With such great value from the new evening menu desserts were always on the cards and thankfully these didn’t disappoint either. Chocolate lovers will be in their element with their Black Forest Sundae. A rich combination of vanilla ice cream, chocolate brownie and boozy kirsch soaked griottine cherries. Across the table, Lemon Tart, raspberry sorbet and raspberry fool delivered a light citrus sweet hit to finish off a delicious evening sampling Lakeside’s deli evening menu.
With more glorious weather on the, booking in early to avoid disappointment is a must at one of Wakefield’s favourite foodie hot spots.
