The best things we ate and drank in April

With spring slowly but surely making an appearance, our favourite restaurants have changed their menus to reflect the new season.

Taking a look back on our many visits throughout the month of April, we’re sharing the highlights for your must-try list. From Michelin Star dining to classic gastropub dishes that we’re still craving more of.

Hotel Du Vin, Harrogate

One of Harrogate’s dreamiest afternoon teas was our first visit for the new month, and it certainly didn’t disappoint. With a display filled with delicate finger sandwiches, the biggest homemade scones with clotted cream and jam, and not forgetting the sweet cakes – we pointed our pinkies up and toasted to a fabulous afternoon with a glass of cold fizz.

Wood Hall Hotel & Spa 7-course tasting menu

Wood Hall Hotel & Spa, Wetherby

We ventured over to one of Yorkshire’s finest hotels, to experience an incredible 7-course tasting menu, that showcases both Asian and Yorkshire influences. With courses featuring fresh truffle, sumptuous pork cheek and spiced clementine, it drives the tastebuds wild!

Don’t forget to try out the Head Chef’s favourite, Lobster Ravioli with a Thai curry lobster bisque.

Trip Ln, Linton, Wetherby LS22 4JA – 01937 587271

Three's A Crowd Harrogate beetroot starter

Three’s A Crowd, Harrogate

Further down the road, we stopped by Harrogate’s favourite gastropub to get a taste of their new mouthwatering spring menu. Crafted by their new head chef Kirsty Cheetham, let’s just say this menu doesn’t skimp on flavour.

We dived into prawn and crab dumplings, crispy Korean fried chicken, fresh caesar salad and 35-day dry aged bavette with super creamy peppercorn sauce – delicious. We of course tried plenty more spring dishes (and cocktails), but you’ll have to check out our review to see what else is available.

Farlam Hall Hotel & Restaurant, Cumbria

Only an hour’s drive away from Yorkshire is the Cumbria-based 4-star hotel, Farlam Hall. This traditional country house is the perfect escape to the countryside, and what better way to make the most of an overnight stay than tucking into Michelin Star rated food?

Think Cumbrian Longhorn Beef Wellington with a tandoor jus or poached loin of cod and white crab meat wrapped in pumpkin. Delicate but powerful flavours made this one of our top monthly eats to remember in April.

A689, Hallbankgate, Brampton CA8 2NG – 016977 46234

The Grand, York

Stepping into spring with something sweet, we made our way over to York’s only 5-star hotel to taste their spring afternoon tea.

Served in their beautiful Rise Restaurant, or outside on the terrace with views of the historic city walls, we tucked into delightful scones with clotted cream, dainty finger sandwiches and perfectly-crafted patisserie including rhubarb compote, chocolate swiss roll and hazelnut choux puff – delicate to eat and absolutely divine.

Station Rise, North Yorkshire, York YO1 6GD – 01904 380038

Old Liquor Store York Ricotta Pancakes

The Old Liquor Store, York

Found within the former Terry’s chocolate orange factory in York is The Old Liquor Store. Still new to the restaurant scene, this hidden gem serves Italian-inspired small plates you’ll be dreaming about for months to come.

Think hot honey-whipped ricotta, king prawns soaked in seaweed and smoked chilli butter and lamb shoulder rigatoni. Not forgetting about the most important dish of the evening, limoncello posset with Yorkshire rhubarb – heavenly.

Bishopthorpe Rd, York YO23 1FT – 01904 950147

Schoolrooms and Assembly dishes in Sheffield red pepper pesto pasta and fish and chips - monthly eats

The Schoolrooms & Assembly, Sheffield

Housed inside a former Victorian schoolhouse on the edge of the beautiful Peak District, is late-night bistro, Assembly. Wholesome dishes bursting with flavour, we delved into classic fish and chips, red pepper pesto tagliatelle and the most indulgent sticky toffee pudding topped with sweet caramel sauce. Undoubtedly one of our top monthly eats in April.

Mill Lee Rd, Low Bradfield, Sheffield S6 6LB – 0114 285 1920

Lavang, Sheffield

We explored another of Sheffield’s best restaurants by stepping into Lavang to taste a new level of Indian fine dining. Sipping on a cocktail in their recently renovated bar area, we then headed into the restaurant to taste an exciting combination of flavours and spices.

Our evening was filled with butter masala, mutton curry and succulent tandoori grill. Bringing secret flavours and recipes from Asia, we already can’t wait to visit again to fill up on other dishes from the menu.

478-480, Fulwood Rd, Sheffield S10 3QD – 0114 263 0106

Wentworth Camellia_House_after_restoration_Interior

Camellia House at Wentworth Woodhouse, Rotherham

The perfect place to enjoy a pot of tea under the camellias and set in the gardens of a prestigious stately home, Camellia House finally opened its doors this April. The previously forgotten Grade II glasshouse has been brought back to life as one of the most romantic destinations in Yorkshire.

Alongside a menu full of teas from across the globe, we indulged in wild mushroom arancini, steamed seabass with pak choi and other flavour packed small plates. A top contender for our top monthly eats in April.

Wentworth, Rotherham S62 7TQ – 01226 351161

Chartwell at Aldwark Manor, York

In an exclusive first look at Aldwark Manor, we stepped into their new fine dining restaurant Chartwell, which underwent a £3 million investment. Headed up by chef Chris O’Callaghan who has a wealth of experience in Michelin and AA Rosette awarded restaurants, the new restaurant is inspired by Sir Winston Churchill’s country home.

The 7-course tasting menu puts a twist on traditional British cuisine, with caramelised onion brioche, salt-aged Yorkshire beef, barbecued scallop and strawberry cheesecake with yuzu – a tasting menu you never want to end.

Aldwark, Alne, York YO61 1UF – 01347 838146

Pizza Pilgrims Leeds pepperoni margherita and capriccosia pizzas - monthly eats

Pizza Pilgrims, Leeds

For the launch of Pizza Pilgrim’s new monthly ‘April’ special, Capricciosa, we paid them a visit to taste the special ourselves, amongst a few other favourites. With wine sourced from Italy, delicious cheese pulls and the creamiest gelato, it’s a must-try for all foodies in Leeds (and Yorkshire in general).

Our favourites included the double pepperoni with hot honey, margarita extra extra with fresh basil pesto – and not forgetting the flavourful smoked mozzarella bites with chilli jam or pickled cucumber salad for a tangy and spicy kick.

16 Boar Ln, Leeds LS1 6EN – 0113 340 4767

Coach & Horses, Harrogate

Another one of Harrogate’s most stunning pubs is the Coach & Horses, a historic gastropub boasting plenty of character. Long considered a local favourite amongst the people of Harrogate, they’ve truly nailed it when it comes to comfort pub food.

Paired with their cask ales on rotation and an unbeatable wine list, dip crusty bread into a delicious baked camembert, indulge in crispy fresh fish and chips or a Yorkshire steak and ale pie topped with the most perfect gravy.
