Summer is almost coming to an end and in the last few months we have seen many things come and go in the Yorkshire restaurant scene, including new awards, new chefs and new exciting restaurant openings. With that, we’re looking forward to the rest of the year and what we can expect to see next.
New dessert hotspot opens in Harrogate
The Pudding Lab, a new dessert-focused eatery, has recently opened its doors in Harrogate, adding a sweet twist to the town’s vibrant culinary scene. Specialising in indulgent treats, The Pudding Lab offers a creative menu featuring everything from decadent cakes and pastries to luxurious puddings and artisan ice creams. With its cosy yet modern interior, this dessert haven is perfect for satisfying your sweet tooth. Located in the heart of Harrogate, it’s quickly becoming a hotspot for locals and visitors alike looking for a unique and delicious dessert experience.
New cafe opens on York high street
A new cafe has opened on York’s streets this month. The Divine Project made its debut on Market Street at the site of the former Toymaster and Early Learning Centre. Joining forces, North-South Bar in Bootham and York-based Divine Coffee Roasters created this concept to celebrate local produce in the city. All of the traybakes on display are made at the Little Blondie Bakehouse in Walmgate, while all the pastries are made by Balterzen’s of Harrogate.
Popular Italian street food eatery to open another shop
Poco Sicilian Street Food is opening its 4th new shop! Announcing on social media, they said: “The works on the unit are almost completed and we can’t wait to show you the final result – another beautiful Poco store 💛 This time, it’s a little unusual location for us, but we believe there’s a lot of potential in it and you’ll love it there!” This follows their recent expansion into Leeds city centre after the success of their first two stores in Burley and Headingley. If you’re a lover of Italian food, this new restaurant opening in Yorkshire is a must-visit!
New independent bar and bottle shop is coming to Horsforth
Do craft beers, artisan wines and natural ciders sound like your thing? Then you’ll love this new opening in Yorkshire! Renovations have started to bring a new independent bar and bottle shop to New Road Side in Horsforth. Alongside a vast selection of beverages to choose from, the shop will also be serving chicchetti-style food to soak up the booze. We’re definitely excited for Hoc Loco to open!
Plans submitted for second Yorkshire location for deluxe hotel chain
The Dakota group submitted plans to transform the Northern House property on Rougier Street into a hotel with over 140 bedrooms, a bar area, multiple dining areas and a rooftop terrace. Following the success of Dakota in Leeds, this York addition would be the second location to open in Yorkshire. The proposal could also create 125 jobs in the area as well as other local opportunities, including graduate schemes, internships and apprenticeships. Keep an eye out for further developments on this new opening in Yorkshire!
Green Room in Leeds gets new kitchen residency
The popular bar and kitchen in Leeds city centre has had a complete menu revamp. Replacing the popular Braizin Squad, Bastards Bistro will be serving up a variety of brunch classics with a whole new deli menu too. Think tiramsu pancakes and sweet potato hash with pork belly banh mi and chicken gyros. You can’t forget about their signature Sunday lunch either! Herby chicken, porchetta or roast seitan served with duck fat roasties and seasonal greens. This new restaurant opening in Yorkshire is certainly something to get excited about.
Ilkley Brewery opens new taproom with popular kitchen residency
The award-winning Ilkley Brewery has opened its first-ever taproom, with popular Leeds-based Italian Stuzzi taking over the kitchen. Featuring rotating cask ales, over 20 beer lines and a brand-new food menu, the taproom brings something completely new to Ilkley. Stuzzi has plenty of nibbles on the menu including Italian small plates, pizzettes and of course their crowd-favourite deep-fried lasagna. Everyone is welcome, including families, at this new restaurant opening in Yorkshire.
Sheffield pub gets a fresh renovation
While not technically a brand-new restaurant opening, this pub in Bradfield has undergone a complete makeover. The Bradfield Plough is a family-friendly pub serving traditional British pub grub which has operated as a pub for over 200 years. The renovations include a new barn dining area which can accommodate tables of all sizes as well as well as a new comfy tap room to enjoy your favourite pint in. If that’s not all, their new menu comes with some super affordable options too!
Iconic East Coast hotel reopens after a 6-month refurb
This East Coast hotel has just received a major upgrade. Hotel Victoria at Robin Hood’s Bay has been completely transformed into the perfect staycation destination. Following a 6-month refurbishment, the hotel has seen a redesign including an upgrade of its dining and entertainment spaces. There are now 23 bedrooms, with most offering stunning views of the East Yorkshire coast and an extra 7 bedrooms to be able to book by the end of the year. The new restaurant opening in the hotel offers a brand new menu featuring a range of British and Mediterrean-inspired dishes at Osborne’s Restaurant and Lounge Bar.
El Gato Negro in Leeds reopens as new Black Cat Club
Another new restaurant opening in Yorkshire, a new activity bar is set to take over the former site of El Gato Negro on Park Row in Leeds city centre. The Black Car Club features over 9 screens to catch up on your favourite live sports, interactive shuffleboard and electronic darts with over 6 different game modes. There’s also a new street food-inspired menu featuring dishes from salt and pepper ribs to loaded dirty fries as well as an extensive cocktail menu. Already taking Manchester by storm, this is one of the more exciting new openings in Yorkshire this year.
Brew York to transform historic East Yorkshire market hall
Brew York, which operates taprooms and bars across Yorkshire, announced plans for a new food hall and event facility last month in the former Goole Market Hall. Known for its amazing craft beer selection, Brew York is also hoping to provide a new space for creative businesses to host commercial and community events. For any craft beer lovers out there, this is definitely a new restaurant opening to look out for this year.
£15m expansion plans revealed for Trinity Kitchen
Revealed this August, Trinity Kitchen has announced plans for a £15m expansion, set to be Trinity’s biggest investment since the centre opened in 2013. The plans are set to create 72,000 sq ft of space including a brand new rooftop terrace overlooking City Square in Leeds. The plans also include using over 15,000 sq ft of unused space above Trinity Kitchen, transforming the already popular venue.
Best Boy Bagels to move to bigger premises in Sheffield
Known for serving up some of the best bagels in Sheffield, Best Boy Bagels is set to expand its business this year with a new venture on Abbeydale Road. Their crowd fundraiser aims to raise over £20,000 to help kit out their new shop with a brand-new kitchen, seating area and event facilities. Try out one of their smoked salmon and cream cheese bagels, or how about a smoked pork belly with a gochujang glaze? Support one of the best new restaurant openings in Yorkshire this year!
The Swine That Dines announces new restaurant opening
What started out as a little sandwich shop just outside of Leeds city centre has now turned into much much more. The Swine That Dine’s owners announced they will be moving to a bigger location in the Autumn of 2024.
Their plans include increasing their menu, wine lists and hosting private dining sessions for their customers. Known for their more unconventional approaches to food, The Swine That Dines makes the most out of their ingredients serving up dishes such as Beef Fat Burger Buns and Lamb Neck Ragu.
New restaurant openings in Yorkshire you might have missed…
New £10m luxurious wellness retreat to open at former Raithwaite Sandsend site
The former Raithwaite Sandsend hotel is set to be completely transformed at the end of this year as a new wellness retreat: Saltmoore. The site will feature two brand-new hotels, a state-of-the-art spa, a 29-bedroom Beach House, four new dining establishments and various other activities for guests to enjoy. The retreat will bring a massive tourist boost to the quaint area of Sandsend and is set to fully open in September this year.
Plans submitted for new La Bottega Milanese to open in York highstreet
Plans were submitted in May for a new coffee shop to open in a former Supercuts site in York. If the plans are permitted, the site will undergo a complete revamp with matte finish sliding windows. Wanting to bring a taste of Milan to York, the coffee shop could create a brand new space for York’s residents and visitors to gather and network over some tasty Italian sweet treats. The brand currently runs two of its coffee shops in Leeds.
New Kirkgate Market food village, STACK, revealed Leeds plans
STACK submitted plans to the council to open a Leeds site, to help boost footfall across the whole market site. The new exciting space will accommodate existing traders, as well as new arrivals – making it one of the biggest sites in the region.
Although no confirmed date has been revealed for the opening, plans are certainly underway for the shipping containers to take over the outdoor space behind Kirkgate Market.
Famous private members club to open a location in Yorkshire
The A-list celebrity-studded Groucho Club is set to open a new location in 2026 at Bretton Hall, only a short distance from Wakefield. This will be the club’s first permanent location outside of London in its 39-year history, found in the Grade II listed hall at Yorkshire Sculpture Park.
The Groucho was originally founded in 1985 on Dean Street in Soho, London, with celebrity members including Stephen Fry, Lily Allen, Noel Gallagher, Rachel Weisz and more.
Popular Thai restaurant to open venues in Leeds & York
Already making a name for itself in the town of Harrogate, Giggling Squid has plans to open their second Yorkshire site in York city centre. It will move into the former Banks’ Music Room shop and will serve a wide-ranging selection of Thai dishes.
In even more exciting news for 2024, Giggling Squid put forward an application to open their debut restaurant in Leeds. Perfect for Thai enthusiasts, guests can take a seat in the vibrant dining room and indulge in authentic, flavour-packed dishes.
Michelin-recommended Sheffield restaurant, JÖRO is relocating to a new site
JÖRO is a Scandinavian restaurant in a “little shipping container”, that opened its doors in South Yorkshire in 2016. With plans to relocate, the new restaurant will be found in the Oughtibridge Paper Mill development alongside a new bar, terrace and BBQ kitchen. The restaurant will continue to innovate and use the finest available native ingredients to serve an elevated British-tasting menu as one of the most exciting new restaurant openings in Sheffield.
