Yorkshire’s Best 7-Course Indian Tasting Menu | Prashad Reviews
//= get_the_date( 'dS F Y' ); ?>Prashad, Drighlington | Review
We visited the North’s most highly-awarded Indian restaurant – aka the restaurant that should be on everyone’s ‘MUST TRY’ list, Prashad, to experience their new spring/summer 7-course tasting menu.
Want to try it for yourself with a complimentary drink? Read on…
A family-run restaurant with Gujarati heritage at the heart of everything they do, Prashad is putting vegetarian Indian cuisine on the map, creating sensational flavours and feeding the people of Yorkshire exactly what they’ve been unknowingly craving.
We’ve had our visit planned for a while now and to say it lived up to expectations wouldn’t even begin to cover it.
As you step into the charming restaurant, you’re instantly hit with a scented cloud of aromatics; sweet, spicy and everything in between. Headed up by Head Chef Minal Patel, cooking up a storm of spices in the kitchen – she puts her own spin on classic Gujarati and Southern Indian delights, and we couldn’t wait to dig in.
Not only is the food excellent, as expected by Prashad, but the prices make this whole experience that much more joyful and fulfilling.
The warm lighting, wonderfully vibrant colours and Indian-inspired interior design all give it the feel of a real, family-run Indian restaurant.
A selection of small plates kicks off the seven-course tasting menu, the type of food you’ll find yourself craving for years to come. The first course is Sanku, an invention of Minal’s that is made with seasonal vegetables and infused with fragrant garam masala. The crisp batter holds its shape as a cone, allowing you to taste every component in each bite. An exceptional start to the evening.
After that, there’s Lasan Paneer Tikka, which takes paneer and gourmet oyster mushrooms from the Yorkshire Mushroom Emporium and marinates them in fresh herbs and spices, before firing them in the tandoor for that perfectly grilled finish.
It’s followed by the Chotta Kebab, an Asian classic with a special Prashad flair that truly deserves an award of its own.
Moving onto some of our favourite dishes of the evening, we dived into one of India’s most popular dishes, Pani Puri. Deep-fried, puffed and golden-brown in appearance. The tart, tangy flavour of the tamarind hits as you bite into the crisp puri shell. Prashad steps it up a notch by serving it three different ways – you’ll have to visit yourself to find out how.
Now everyone knows a trip to Prashad isn’t complete without the iconic Masala Dosa. Both big in flavour and size (literally!), the light yet fluffy crepe is stuffed with a beautifully spicy potato and onion curry. The best thing, though? For an added touch of sweetness, pack everything onto a fork and dip into the coconut chutney and lentil broth. There’s a good reason the Michelin Guide recommend that dish…
For the last savoury item of the tasting menu, we ate the spiced paneer kofta and spinach dough balls, served in a tomato raso infused with caraway – leaving us completely full with no crumbs left on the plate. Then, for those anticipating the evening’s dessert course, the delicately sweet cranberry and pecan potli is absolutely worth the wait.
The tasting menu at Prashad is like nothing you’ll have tried before. It’s a true sensory experience – with sights, smells, and tastes that are completely unmatched.
Coming from the Head Chef herself on her favourite dish at Prashad, “The Lasan Paneer Tikka is a must-try. And my guilty pleasure, of course, is the Pani Puri served three ways – my absolute favourite!”
So if you’re a vegetarian, vegan or full-on meat lover – a meal at Prashad shouldn’t go unmissed. Whether you’ve tried the tasting menu before or not, the latest seasonal twists to the menu make it a whole new experience. We wonder what award is coming their way next…
