New Sheffield Wine Week Starting Next Month
//= get_the_date( 'dS F Y' ); ?>The first-ever Sheffield Wine Week is set to start next month, with bars and restaurants all over the city coming together to celebrate all things wine.
Despite being known as the ‘real ale capital of the world’, organisers want the city to also start celebrating its rich wine heritage.
The wine week will commence on Wednesday 26th June and will run through til Saturday 30th June allowing for a full week of wine celebrations across the Steel City.
Wine bars Tenaya Wine in Crookes and The Old Shoe in the city centre teamed up to create a week dedicated to wine, wanting to put Sheffield on the map as a community dedicated to independent, artisan wines.
“A big part of why we opened Tenaya Wine was to try and expand the world of wine in Sheffield. We felt there just wasn’t enough wine!” said Sarah Hatton and Virginia Myers, the bar and wine shop’s co-owners.
“Since then, we have welcomed a few new wine spots and it’s so exciting to see the wine scene growing in this great city. Sheffield Wine Week is a way to celebrate the growing appreciation of good wine here and open the community’s eyes to what’s on offer. Let’s celebrate great wine together!”
There will be a variety of events for Sheffield Wine Week, such as wine list takeovers, food and wine pairings, and meet the winemakers. For example, Tenaya and St. Heloise will host their seasonal “Supper Club” on Wednesday. Elm in Broomhall is hosting an “Organic & Orgasmic Pintxos Party” on Thursday.
Next, on Friday there’s a meet the winemaker event at Starmore Boss and Naturally Wines featuring Italy’s Pierpaolo Badalucco. The Sheffield Wine Week finishes with an English takeover of The Old Shoe’s by-the-glass list.
“I love beer. It’s part of what initially endeared me to Sheffield,” explained Mike Pomranz, co-owner of both The Old Shoe and importer Quality Ferments. “But in recent years, we’ve seen a continued confluence of top-quality beer, wine, cider, and other drinks into a single category of artisan alcoholic beverages.
Beer certainly gets its due; Sheffield already has a beer week. ‘Confluence Week’ sounds a bit insane. So ‘Sheffield Wine Week’ was the next logical step to further advocate for all of the amazing drinks offered at bars and shops across the city.”
Any restaurant, bar or shop that supports fine wine is welcome to take part in Sheffield Wine Week.
