Knaresborough is a true North Yorkshire gem. Easy to get to from Harrogate, York and Leeds, this market town is perfect for a leisurely weekend visit – whether it’s a family stroll and an ice cream, a picturesque dog walk or lunch with a lovely riverside view.

1) Explore Knaresborough Castle

Overlooking the river Nidd, Knaresborough Castle is a facinating stronghold, open throughout the year to the public. Take a stroll round the grounds, and visit the Courtroom Museum to discover an original Tudor courtroom.

You can learn more about Knaresborough’s history, and even enjoy a family friendly activities room too.

2) Visit Goldsborough Hall

Goldsborough Hall is a stunning 16th Century house, formerly the home of Princess Mary. This outstanding house has beautiful garden, a Jacobean library and Michelin recommended dining, making it the perfect place to stay and dine.

You can enjoy a luxurious afternoon tea in their Orangery restaurant, with access to their gardens for the perfect afternoon.

3) Explore Mother Shipton’s cave

To get to Mother Shipton’s Cave, first wind your way through the ancient forest, a lovely walk, suitable for all the family in the autumn leaves or light spring sunshine.

Mother Shipton’s cave is seen as one of England’s oldest tourist attractions, where you can explore the unique geological phenomenon of the petrifying well.

The water from the well turns everyday objects into stone, and you can even take a stone-turned teddy bear home with you. Find out the legends and history behind this fascinating spot and explore for yourself.

Marigold Cafe Things to do Knaresborough

4) Enjoy lunch by the river at Marigold Cafe

Perfectly nestled right next to the river, Marigold cafe is the ideal lunch, or coffee and cake stop off whether it’s rain or shine. There’s plenty of outdoor seating, and more cosy spots inside next to the log burning fire.

This photographed spot is dog-friendly, and serves a great range of lunch options, coffees and homemade cakes.

You can even hire a Marigold rowing but, or stay onshore to unwind and enjoy the river views – this spot is popular for a reason!

5) Take a row on Blenkhorn’s boats

Locals and tourists alike have enjoyed a boat trip in Knaresborough for over one hundred years.

Just up from Marigold Cafe is Blenkhorn boats, next to The Worlds End pub. These iconic red and green boats are the perfect way to explore the tranquil river Nidd.

You don’t need to book, just turn up between March-October! This is a tourist favourite and one of the best things to do in Knaresborough.

7) Brew and Bao

Brew and Bao is a newer opening in Knaresborough, offering streetfood, bao buns and loaded fries. Located conveniently on Station Road, they are dog friendly, so ideal for a post walk pint and bite to eat.

There’s both outdoor and inside seating, ideal for a casual stop off with friends.

This is a great foodie spot and one of tastiest things to do in Knaresborough.

8) Explore the nearby scenic walks and circular routes

Knaresborough has plenty of nearby walks to enjoy, many of which start or end in this quaint market town. Enjoy views of the river with a coffee or ice cream in hand.

Some of our favourite walks include the Nidd Gorge woodland walk , ideal for families, or the longer Knaresborough, Nidd Gorge, and Old Bilton Circular.

9) Go for a cosy drink at Blind Jacks pub

Up next is Blind Jacks, the perfect cosy pub to pop into before you reluctantly head home). As you can likely guess, there’s a great array of ever-changing craft beers to sample, before picking your favourite pint.
