York's most exciting new addition Mr P's Curious Tavern
//= get_the_date( 'dS F Y' ); ?>Between the designer shops and just around the corner from York’s iconic Minster sits Michelin starred Chef Andrew Pern’s latest venture, the 80 seater aptly named Mr P’s Curious Tavern on Low Petergate. Small plates with international flavours and the quality of the Star Inn at Harome can be found on the menu, which changes every three to four weeks with daily specials to keep even the most routine regulars interested.
Curious it definitely is as the décor is both elegant and quirky with gold and dark greens amongst toby jugs, chiming ornamental cukoo clocks, not to mention the antique oriental Chinese bar upstairs in the Gin Parlour, where you can find more than 60 gins to sample. All this in combination with the different quirky dining areas creates a great atmosphere, making it perfect for a light snack and a gin cocktail while resting from some retail therapy or just as suited for a romantic date night or special celebration.
When we visited we were greeted by welcoming staff that really understood the menu and ingredients as they talked us through each individual dish we tried. Their passion for the place and what they offer shone through which further added to the atmosphere and our experience.
We had to try one of their gins with our meal so we opted for one of Mr P’s and also our favourites – ‘Slingsby’s Rhubarb Gin’ and Fever-Tree Tonic, served with blueberries and raspberries. Delicious and refreshing.
First up the ‘seaside’ pickled cockles, mussels and lobster served with samphire and micro fennel. You could’ve closed your eyes and thought you were stood on Whitby harbour. The vinaigrette pulled the dish together and paired really well with the samphire.
Next up the sashimi of tuna with scallions, hot horseradish, pink ginger and oriental jam, a really well balanced dish.
After this we had the perfectly cooked black and blue steak, served with blow torched leek, glazed beetroot and an ash leek mayo. Jamie the Head Chef explained that the steak is cooked on a screaming hot tray to achieve its amazing barbeque taste.
From the daily specials menu we were treated to ‘Meat and Two Veg’ in the form of tender lamb loin served with maple glazed sweetbreads, smoked bacon, broccoli and fig puree. Each ingredient complimented one another perfectly.
For dessert we tried the delicious unbaked chocolate tart, this came with orange jelly, orange chantilly crème, orange zest and rock salt. Even if you came just for this dish and a glass of prosecco it would be well worth the visit!
Overall our experience at Mr P’s couldn’t have been better, amazing food, great staff, gin cocktails and quirky atmosphere. We will definitely be making any excuse to return again soon.
