Michelin-starred North Yorkshire Chefs List the Best Cheap Places to Eat
//= get_the_date( 'dS F Y' ); ?>Michelin-starred chefs Shaun Rankin of Shaun Rankin at Grantley Hall and Michael Wignall of The Angel at Hetton in Skipton share their recommendations with Sky News for the best value restaurants in North Yorkshire.
As part of their Cheap Eats series, Sky News has rounded up Shaun Rankin and Michael Wignall’s favourite destinations to get a cheap meal.
Here are Shaun Rankin’s and Michael Wignall’s top recommendations for the cheapest places to eat in North Yorkshire:
Ye Olde Naked Man, in Settle
First on the list is this traditional cafe and bakery in the heart of the market town of Settle. Michael told Sky: “I’ve always taken the kids there, whether that’s for a hot chocolate and cake or sandwich. It’s so nice, really popular (for good reason)”. If old-school cafes are your thing, this place situated opposite Settle’s market square is a must-visit even if it’s just for its peculiar name.

Paradise food, at Daleside Nurseries
Next up, is an unsuspecting garden centre restaurant that truly packs a punch with its dishes. Starting as a pop-up, the now full-time restaurant boasts a former Michelin-starred team with a focus on using the freshest ingredients. Michael told Sky: ” They’re hard-working and have core values that I really respect, and I just love coming here for a great meal. It is super popular.”

Rind, at Courtyard Dairy
Local favourite Courtyard Dairy’s Rind restaurant is next on the list of Shaun Rankin’s and Michael Wignall’s cheapest eats. Mostly known for its famous cheese shop, Courtyard Diary decided to expand and open its very own restaurant featuring some of its homemade cheeses that The Angel at Hetton also uses! Michael told Sky: “Our restaurant manager is Italian, and even she raves about it. That’s when you know it’s good. The toppings are a bit different, and it’s only 15 minutes away so we do visit often.”
Crows Nest Barn near Settle, Austwick LA2 8AS – 01729 823291
Blue Lion, in East Witton
Situated in the pretty Yorkshire Dales village of East Witton lies The Blue Lion. Three-time winners of the Good Pub Guide’s ‘Dining Pub of the Year’, you know it’s going to be something special. Shaun Rankin told Sky: “Enjoy a scenic walk through the surrounding countryside before stopping off for lunch – their light lunch menu includes personal favourites such as croque madame with a rocket salad and Black Sheep-battered fish and chips.”
Main Road, East Witton, Nr Leyburn DL8 4SN – 01969 624273
Oliver’s Pantry, in Ripon
To round off Shaun Rankin’s recommendations for the cheapest eats in North Yorkshire, is this cafe in Ripon. Oliver’s Pantry is situated just off the market square serving up wholesome dishes and the best baked goods. Shaun told Sky: “They do great coffee alongside a delicious all-day brunch, an array of sweet treats and their seasonal lunch menu packed with fresh homemade dishes.”
