The Star Inn The Harbour Review, North Yorkshire & Whitby’s Newest Catch
Some plaices can krill it; whilst others cod not do batter – ok, enough of the fish puns already, but it is without a doubt that The Star Inn The Harbour does exactly these two things and more. Only recently opening its doors and with almost panoramic views of the stunning Whitby Harbour, this new restaurant has easily paved the way as one of the best seafood offerings along the East Coast if not the whole of Yorkshire.
Cleverly detailed and celebrating all things local, the menu at The Star Inn The Harbour is an incredible array of locally sourced produce ranging from Whitby crab to Ripon veal. Deciding on starters, we settled on a crisp deep fried calamari with a delicious squid ink aioli. Alongside this, we choose a ‘Scarborough fair’ of steamed Shetland mussels with a smooth parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme sauce. All delicately presented, the food tasted excellent. You’ll be spoilt for choice, given the emphasis owner Andrew Pern (The Star Inn Harome , The Star Inn The City and Mr P’s Curious Tavern) has given to regionally sourced produce.
We sampled an excellent hoppy and pale Whitby brewery IPA. As well as this, Andrew’s uniquely labelled Pernshire wines are available whilst fizz and champagne are covered by names like the Bruno Paillard Cuvee and the Ridgewood Cavendish Brut. Along with a healthy selection of gins and soft drinks, you soon get the feeling that no stone has been left unturned. For the main course, the North Sea takes up a proud display next to most of what is available. Operations Director Matthew Hunter explained; “We literally buy from around the corner. We buy the very best fish and shellfish from the working harbour market along Pier Road.”
After some deliberation, we ordered goujons of local breaded day boat fish which came with a delicious lemon pickle, taramasalata and rocket salad. The second dish was a super lightly batter coated North Sea Cod served with beef dripping chips, homemade tartare sauce and fresh lemon. By this point, the menu had got the better of us, we also ordered a side of truffled fries with parmesan which; and like the rest, we would highly recommend.
If you can manage desserts; puddings from the parlour include a knickerbocker glory to a ‘Two Chefs’ ale cake as well as a cheese board covering a local Sandsend cheese with cucumber relish to a truffled Tunworth Brie.
Overall, our visit and the chance to meet the team behind this new venture had been nothing short of fantastic. It can be certain you’ll leave The Star Inn The Harbour with a taste to come back. The opper-tuna-ty (sorry) to revisit here would simply be too hard to resist.
