Back in 2007, Marco Pierre White was guest of honour to open the Tearoom, which is an integral part of the hotel itself. The antique Grandfather clock tick tocking in the corner, mismatched crockery, linen napkins, tiered cake stands and traditional silver cutlery, all add to the feel of country style and timeless charm, just like Helmsley itself.

Traditional Afternoon Tea is served on vintage fine bone-china crockery, with dainty finger sandwiches, filled with delicious savouries, such as Yorkshire Baked Ham with Mustard Mayonnaise and Cucumber, cream cheese and chive; a selection of melt-in-the-mouth patisserie, with home-made scones, served with a choice of home-made preserves and thick clotted local cream. As you may expect, there is a wonderful array of quality loose teas to choose from, including black, green, white teas and herbal infusions. The most popular choice is the Black Swan Blend (First Flush Assam and Ceylon teas) and some more exotic ones, for the adventurous, include Phoenix Oolong and Flowering Osmanthus, along with a delicious range of coffees and other beverages.

Afternoon Tea at The Black Swan has won armfuls of awards over the years, and is always an occasion to truly savour, sourcing most of the ingredients, where possible, from the rural food producers in this beautiful area of North Yorkshire and you can certainly taste the difference. It can also be served in the hotels lounges by a roaring log fire or in the pretty English tiered gardens to the rear of the property… as the weather and your mood dictates!
