Yorkshire AA Rosette restaurants added and removed in 2024 (so far)

The inspectors at the AA Restaurant Guide have certainly been keeping themselves busy – with plenty of new Yorkshire restaurants already added this year.

Suffice to say, 2024 looks set to be a big year for Yorkshire restaurants – with our county already appearing to dominate the new guide.

As well as some new additions earlier this year, plenty of existing AA Yorkshire restaurants have also been upgraded – including The Angel at Hetton which has recently been elevated from four rosettes to five.

New Yorkshire restaurants added to the AA Guide

In the Autumn update of the AA guide, a number of Yorkshire restaurants received an upgrade, including The Old Deanery in Ripon which was upgraded from one to three AA rosettes in the space of six months.

The fine dining hotspot and top sustainable restaurant Pignut in Helmsley was also upgraded to three rosettes after first being added to the guide last year, along with the Chartwell Restaurant at Aldwark Manor gaining three.

Other new additions and upgradings from earlier this year include: West 10 Bar & Kitchen, Sheffield; Forge, Middleton Lodge Estate (no rosettes to three); Bar & Restaurant Eighty-Eight, Ripon (one rosette to two); Shaun Rankin at Grantley Hall (three rosettes to four); Legacy at The Grand, York (two rosettes to three); 1864, Driffield (two rosettes); The Judge’s Lodging, York (three rosettes to two).

Five AA Rosette-awarded The Angel was the star of the show for this edition of awards, with the restaurant stating on social media “We are immensely proud to announce that The Angel at Hetton has been awarded the highest accolade of five AA Rosettes from the AA Restaurant Guide 2025, making us Yorkshire’s first and only restaurant to receive this honour.

Chef Michael Wignall and our entire team are thrilled to receive this recognition, cementing our place among the world’s best restaurants.”

Restaurants in the guide are regularly re-inspected, with Rosette allocations susceptible to change with the turnover of chefs and management teams.

Yorkshire restaurants removed from the AA Guide

Three now-closed Yorkshire restaurants – The Man Behind The Curtain in Leeds, The General Tarleton in Knaresborough and The Rattle Owl in York – have been removed from the guide. Michael O’Hare’s The Man Behind The Curtain has also lost its Michelin star and has now rebranded as Psycho Sandbar.

Other downgradings and removals include: The Worsley Arms Hotel in Hovingham (two rosettes to none); Mallyan Spout Hotel in Goathland (one rosette to none), The Fairfax Arms (two to one).

The initial AA Rosette restaurants award was given out in 1956, marking the beginning of a national programme to rate the calibre of cuisine provided by hotels and restaurants. Being an award, not a classification, the Rosettes are given out annually after a visit by one or more of their inspectors.
