English summer gardens, award-winning afternoon tea, cucumber sandwiches neatly cut into tidy shaped rectangles and scones served with clotted cream and jam. Our visit to the Black Swan Hotel in Helmsley last week left us in no doubt as to how good things can actually get when the British sun shines and you’re treated to a truly remarkable mix of champagne, sandwiches, tea and cake.
We arrived in market town Helmsley to check out the fabulous Black Swan Afternoon Tea Experience. In absolute awe of their beautiful grade II listed building; we were suitably met by our very welcoming hosts for the afternoon. Having picked the best day of the year so far, we were easily at home in their picturesque gardens. With this in mind and for those who have not ventured to these parts before, The Black Swan will leave you with an impression of what everyone else dreams Yorkshire to be.
Comfortably seated, The Black Swan Afternoon Tea Experience includes optional champagne on arrival. It only seemed fitting that we should accept on their generous offer whilst we explored their exciting menu choosing from their range of specialist tea which would compliment the sandwiches and cakes which would soon follow.
There is a whole array of teas here. From oolong to white, from traditional to green, you will not be left for spoilt for choice here. After some serious deliberation, we ordered the feel good Black Swan Blend and ventured out more with a subtle pomegranate and passion fruit tea which left us both questioning why we have stayed traditional for so long.
A three tiered stand bursting with colour then presented itself on our table. It really was food that tasted as good as it looked. From cucumber with cream cheese and chive to an exquisite Yorkshire ham and Dijon mustard mayonnaise, the selection of sandwiches were excellent. Each mouthful as good as the last, we topped up our cups of tea and devoured the next layer of super tasty sweet treats. Our approval simply didn’t falter.
Come rain or shine, this place is doing some great things. We left knowing it wouldn’t be long until we made a return visit to Helmsley and in particular its food centre-piece, The Black Swan.
