Great British Menu star teases new restaurant opening in York

Ahmed Abdalla is set to leave his Head Chef position at fine-dining restaurant Legacy at The Grand, York, later this month, with whispers of a new restaurant on the horizon.
He’s hinted at plans to open a place of his own not far from York in the not-too-distant future. While plans remain under wraps, we know it will focus on produce, community and, of course, excellent food.
As an honorary Yorkshireman originally from London, Abdalla has called the city home for the past 10 years, with its thriving food scene and the abundance of fantastic local produce playing a huge part in his culinary identity.
For Ahmed, one of the biggest draws of Yorkshire is the sheer variety of produce on offer. Showcasing Yorkshire-grown, caught and harvested ingredients is key to his dishes, menus and style.
“York and Yorkshire have a massive strength in the variety of produce that they have to offer. I love being able to weave elements of our locality into whatever I am cooking. This way, whatever I put on a plate or a menu pays homage to our county using its standout produce,” explains Ahmed.
It is also the sense of community and Yorkshire hospitality he has experienced whilst here that drives his plans to open somewhere that can become a hub for the community and a key part of local dining.
“I moved to York having never been here before and, from the beginning, I was welcomed with open arms by locals. It is true that Yorkshire hospitality is different: no frills, no fuss, just warm and friendly, and you never leave feeling hungry.
“It was clear to me from very early on in relocating that I wanted to stay here, and now I want to create something for the community that encompasses what I have found during my time here.”
He’s also no stranger to the spotlight, having appeared on the BBC’s 20th-anniversary series of Great British Menu, representing Yorkshire and the North East. Ahmed was one of two wild-card chefs brought back for the final, adding another exciting milestone to his career.
Now, with his departure from Legacy approaching, the prospect of a restaurant of his own is certainly one to watch. A place that celebrates Yorkshire’s produce, welcomes the community and showcases Ahmed’s creative approach to cooking sounds like a pretty exciting addition to Yorkshire’s restaurant scene.
We’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for more details on what’s next for Ahmed Abdalla. Whatever he has planned, we can’t wait to see it come to life.
