National Yorkshire Pudding Day sees the launch of Daft Puddin in York

One award winning chef in York is reclaiming the humble Yorkshire pudding and taking it to new culinary heights from Sunday 4th February (National Yorkshire Pudding Day) in York’s historic Shambles Market with an eye catching street food trailer that will be selling gourmet sweet and savoury Yorkshire puddings with a twist. The trailer will sit on a permanent pitch and will be open 7 days a week. A second mobile truck follows at the end of May to spread the Daft Puddin’ gospel around Britain and for private events.

Daft Puddin’, the brainchild of ad guy turned award winning chef Jason Hartley, takes inspiration from cultures from far and wide such as North Africa, the Caribbean and the Southern U.S. as well as the mining communities of South Yorkshire with his signature dish – The Pits – a dramatic all black creation features a charcoal Yorkshire pudding filled with slow cooked rare breed pork infused with smoky, chocolatey flavours from Mexico and a seam of melted black cheese made with charcoal from the Featherstone mines in Yorkshire. He is, of course, planning to serve the ever popular traditional roast in a pudding – albeit with refined touches such as grated bone marrow on top.

“It’s been funny to see my sweet creations really capture peoples imagination as I think the concept of a sweet Yorkshire pudding plays with people’s taste-bud expectations,” explains Jason, “I remember always having cold Yorkshires with jam as a kid so it’s just an update of that idea really.” His Tykes T & Biccies vanilla Yorkshire Pudding is covered in a chocolate glaze using bean to bar chocolate from Duffy Sheardown in Grimsby filled with Yorkshire Tea infused ice cream and rolled in crushed custard crème biscuits and topped with a hot chocolate sauce.
“All my food uses the very best native rare breed meats from the Yorkshire Dales as well as organic flour, free range eggs, milk, artisan cheese and locally grown veg all from leading small scale Northern producers. I am a Northern mudblood,” begins Jason, “a dad from Rotherham, a mum from Oldham, born in Lincolnshire, a childhood in Blackpool, holidays in the Lake District, university in Leeds. I believe what unites us Northerners is also what makes us unique.”
He continues, “With Daft Puddin’, I wanted to create something positive, something that was proud of our heritage, proud of our people, proud of the phenomenal farmers and artisan producers of food and drink in the North and proud of the 100’s of cultures that call the North home, and most of all, something really bloody tasty. I’d like Daft Puddin’, in some small way, to raise awareness of the region, its positives as well as the challenges it faces.”
“I picked York to launch Daft Puddin’ in because my brand is all about being quirky but beautiful and there is no where in Britain more quirky and beautiful than York.”
Available: Shambles Market, 5 Silver Street, York YO1 8RY – from 4th February 2018
