Summer landed in spectacular British fashion last May Bank Holiday weekend as we went along to Leeds Feast at the new Water Lane Boathouse. On empty stomachs, we made our way through big crowds, happy faces, brass bands, grand food and good weather. Leeds Feast 2017 had arrived!
Leeds Feast was in some ways typical of many others like it in that a slow walk round, followed by a second and third makes a good strategy before one can truly appreciate the menu of food that’s on offer. And there was plenty on offer here. We decided at this point that a further strategy would be to start with a drink. Like the food, we found we were not short on choice. Their beer selection was very good. We ordered Beavertown American pale ale knowing full well we would return to the pints of Northern Monk and Magic Rock a little while later.
We met some great traders at Leeds Feast. Frizza were knocking up some serious dough with their take on pizza, whilst Noisette Bakehouse were bringing a very much posh afternoon tea feel with their hand baked and truly scrumptious cakes (the towering and distinctive shaped berry bundt and the blueberry and lemon cake with a cornmeal crumb had everyone’s attention). The exceptionally friendly people at Smak! served up BBQ kielbasa (that is Polish for sausage) and their pierogi (Polish dumplings) with ground beef, pork, herbs and sour cream proved to be a popular hit.
Once our appetites had been satisfied, we strolled along to Ableforth’s Gin Bar. The guys here couldn’t do enough despite them being busy all afternoon. They handed us their award winning Bathtub gin. Served with cardamom and orange, it made an excellent accompaniment to the food we had just eaten. We soon found ourselves staying around late at Water Lane Boathouse. We ordered more drinks and soaked up the atmosphere. Maybe it was the weather that had made us do this, maybe the food or possibly the music. But maybe it was just the fact that Leeds Feast 2017 had managed to bring all of these things together into making it a truly epic bank holiday weekend.
