Previous Head Chef at the Rattle Owl on Micklegate in York, Tom Heywood, opened his restaurant, Pignut, in Helmsley with his partner and sommelier Laurissa Cook at the beginning of summer 2023.

In the downstairs restaurant, you can indulge in their 8-course tasting menu in the evening or 4-course tasting menu for lunch. Upstairs, relax with a drink in hand and enjoy some delicious snacks.

After dreaming of opening his own restaurant since becoming a chef years ago, their Helmsley restaurant was discovered and has flourished since the summer. With Tom living in Helmsley years ago, and the town being loved for its beautiful countryside views, serene community and being surrounded by incredible suppliers, it became the perfect fit.

Also, home to Bantam and the Feversham Arms Hotel & Verbena Spa, Pignut Helmsley has brought something different to town’s thriving dining scene. With an intimate and inclusive setting, you can watch Tom and his team curating dishes in their open kitchen.

On the tasting menu at Pignut Helmsley, you can expect dishes such as ‘Rogan Spiced Crab’, ‘Castle Howard Aged Beef’, ‘Wild Brill and Mussels’ and more. Each course is crafted using the waste from other courses, helping them achieve zero waste.

Reimagining fine dining with a commitment to sustainability and innovation is what makes Pignut truly special. Their food is sustainably sourced, using many favoured local suppliers including Shortstack Farm, Castle Howard, Food Circle York, Rocket & Russet, as well as foraging ingredients themselves from Helmsley Walled Garden to help curate a special menu.

Pignut Helmsley’s tasting menu and smaller setting allow for a more in-depth conversation between chef and guests. The menu will regularly change throughout the seasons and depending on what produce is available to them.

Partner, Laurissa Cook is the expert on drinks, helping you perfectly match your wine to the dish. Previously the Restaurant Manager and Sommelier at the Rattle Owl, her knowledge and passion for organic wines are certainly unmatched. Their drinks menu boasts organic, natural wines, as well as local beers from Helmsley Brewing Co.

Visit Pignut in Helmlsey on 12 Bridge Street, YO62 5DX, open on Wednesday and Thursday from 6 pm or Friday and Saturday for lunch from 12.30 pm and dinner from 6 pm.
