Review | The East Coast hidden gem that’s just launched a stunning new dining area

The Plough Scalby Review

A gastropub with stunning rooms, full of character and charm, The Plough in Scalby is the perfect haven on the North Yorkshire coast for a seaside staycation.

Everyone knows the East Yorkshire coast is full of hidden beauty spots just waiting to be explored. The only thing that’s missing is a beautiful place to stay. And The Plough in Scalby has provided just that.

Nestled in the picturesque village of Scalby, The Plough is just an 8 minute drive from Scarborough’s North Bay. With an AA-Rosette award-winning restaurant, boutique bedrooms and now a recently renovated Garden Lounge, we simply HAD to pay them a visit.

New Garden Lounge at The Plough

To kick off the summer season, The Plough recently renovated their terrace area which we were incredibly impressed with. The Garden Lounge provides guests with a brand-new dining space away from the cosy pub interior. If you’re looking for your next date-night spot this has to be on your list!

Offering a stylish space for both dining and drinks, where elegance meets comfort – it’s a place everyone will be requesting to book, come summer or winter. The new design benefits from natural lighting in the day, which moves to romantic lighting at night.

From the first step through the door, the sheer elegance of the venue blew us away. Further elevating The Plough as a destination venue.

New Head Chef with an Impressive Background

Alex Perkins joined The Plough last December as their new Executive Chef. Starting at the Blue Bicycle in York, Perkins then moved up the coast to open the popular Bridge Cottage Bistro in Sandsend, at the age of 27.

Throughout his 10 years at the bistro, he was featured in the prestigious Good Food Guide for 8 consecutive years before the pandemic hit. He also featured in many notorious national and local newspapers, including in editorial and food reviews.

Alex was inspired to become a chef by his family, who have owned The White Horse & Griffin restaurant in Whitby for over 20 years: the first gastro-pub of its kind to be established in that area.

As a child, he learnt everything there was to know about running a restaurant in a quaint coastal town, making the most of the abundance of fresh produce on offer – and now he’s bringing his unique knowledge and flair to The Plough at Scalby.

What To Expect from the Menu

The best way The Plough describe their menu is classic British with a modern twist.
Using new and exciting flavours, expect stunning dishes showcasing locally sourced ingredients and seafood.

With a menu for every occasion, from traditional Sunday lunches with all the trimmings to casual tapas and mouthwatering gastropub classics, paired with a delicious cocktail or two – it’s the perfect place to relax.

Keeping up with the seasonal produce, The Plough changes its menu throughout the year and regularly updates the specials board so you can expect something different every time you visit.

Featuring on their Tapas section, the Heritage Beetroot Carpaccio and Salt & Pepper Tempura Squid is ideal for sharing.

We’d recommend The Plough’s East Coast Fish Stew for main course, with saffron potatoes and rouille crouton or the Market Fish of the Day.

Their famous Wagyu Steak Burger is also to die for. Served with Monterey Jack cheese, tomato, gem lettuce and dill pickle served on a sourdough bun.

The Plough Scalby Review – Final Thoughts

We will definitely return to The Plough for our next trip to the North Yorkshire coast. Their comfort-focused bedrooms, award-winning food and traditional pub/stylish lounge interior work so well together.

Their new Garden Lounge has created a stunning new contemporary vibe that was certainly needed in the area. If this hidden gem wasn’t already on your list, it should be now.
