Award-winning restaurant Tonco in Sheffield has announced its closure
//= get_the_date( 'dS F Y' ); ?>The team behind Tonco, one of Sheffield’s most well-loved and stylish restaurants, have announced they will be closing their doors towards the end of March.
Tonco first made its Sheffield debut in late 2019, opening a restaurant on Sharrow Vale Road’s Dyson Place after a run of well-received pop-ups.
However, owners have now revealed that – after less than 5 years in the city – they will be shutting up shop for good, citing “increased rent” and “rising costs across the board during 2023”.
Following the sad news, Tonco Sheffield owners Flo Russel and business partner Joe Shrewsbury took to their Instagram to break the news to their beloved customers.
Ending things on a high, they said it had been “immensely empowering and fulfilling” to run their own restaurant for the past four years as they thanked their loyal customers for their support.
They said: “It is with some sadness (and much optimism) that we confirm the imminent closure of TONCO the restaurant. We will be cooking and vibing up to and including the 23rd March, when we will shut the door on this chapter of the TONCO dream.”
“It’s been a rollercoaster four years, but with increased rent at the end of 2022 and rising costs across the board during 2023, we no longer feel able to run the restaurant to the best of our abilities without drastically altering quality, staffing levels or menu prices.”
“It has been immensely empowering and fulfilling to realise our small dream in the city of potential that is Sheffield. Existential events aside, we’ve learnt a lot, created some amazing food, tasted some delicious wine, and met several thousand lovely people – which is something we will find time to celebrate.”
Proud of what they achieved in a short space of time, owners said that Tonco in Sheffield was home to a hard-working group of staff.
They also said how they were proud to work with a group of local and national suppliers through the different seasons, helping farmers and producers receive more well-deserved recognition.
Over the years they made such an impact on the hospitality scene, not only Sheffield but across Yorkshire as a whole. Recently accolades for the site include a feature in the Observer Food Monthly 2022 Awards for ‘Best Restaurant’ Runners Up.
Tonco will close its doors for the final time on Saturday 23rd March 2024, so make sure to head down to taste their seriously delicious, award-winning food before one of Sheffield’s best restaurants says its last goodbye.
