Yorkshire village pubs honoured with prestigious CAMRA awards

Two East Yorkshire village pubs have been honoured with prestigious awards by CAMRA (The Campaign For Real Ale).

Located in Cottingham and the Yorkshire Wolds respectively, both were recognised for their high-quality ales and inviting, cosy atmospheres.

Judged on the quality of their real ale, atmosphere, decor, service, value for money and community focus, the two local favourites came out on top after being narrowed down from a shortlist of five.

The Hugh Fitz-Baldric in Cottingham was named East Yorkshire’s Village Pub Of The Year by CAMRA judges, whilst The Goodmanham Arms in the Yorkshire Wolds village of Goodmanham came a close second.

The Hugh Fitz-Baldric is a charming micropub that is named, or so the story goes, after a local Cottingham man who was the first Sheriff of Yorkshire.

Furnished with repurposed items, it has a real community feel as well as a log burner that adds a cosy feel during the winter months.

The village pub serves five changing cask beers and also boasts a strong gin selection, not to mention several fridges filled will Lilley’s cider and a wide selection of bottled craft beers.

The runner-up, meanwhile, is also a very worthy contender – boasting gorgeous traditional interiors, roaring logburners and even, sometimes, an iron cooking pot hanging from the main fireplace.

The Goodmanham Arms also has its own brewery, All Hallows, and serves up its own regular brews including Peg Fyfe Mild, Mischief Maker, and Ragged Robyn.

Speaking on the recent win Vito Loggozi, landlord of The Goodmanham Arms, told Hull Live he was “very proud”.

He said: “As you know, this trade is very hard at the moment so to achieve the CAMRA award, well, we are very proud.

“We have a traditional country pub and we give our customers good value.”
