The History of The Shambles York

The Shambles in York has a rich history, dating back to York’s Domesday entry of 1086. Many of the buildings that you can still see on the street date back from the 14th to the 17th centuries. Once known as Great Flesh Shambles, the street was mainly occupied by butchers from the 1700s, who proudly displayed their meat hanging off beams and hooks outside of their shops. If you look closely the next time you visit, some of these hooks are still visible today on shop fronts.

Food at The Shambles

Famous for its show-stopping sandwiches, the Shambles Kitchen is a must-visit eatery that sits right in the thick of the action. Famous for its sparkler-loaded Guy Fawkes barbacoa butties, all meats here are lovingly smoked for hours on site.

If tea and cake are more your thing, make sure to try a traditional cream or afternoon tea at Earl Grey Tea Rooms. Another Shambles favourite is Ye Old Shambles Tavern, known for its speciality ales and a vast stock of Yorkshire-made spirits. For a second grab-and-go option, consider a freshly baked pie from the Shambles Sausage & Pie Company.

If street food is what you’re looking for, then head over to The Shambles Market to sample different cuisines from a range of vendors such as North African street food at Los Moros or mouthwatering Asian trader Thai Season. There’s a dedicated crumble stall, a mouthwatering burrito stand, a freshly-made crepe station and even a bagel stand in the food court serving all kinds of sandwiches and sweet and savoury bagels.
