Review of Prashad, Yorkshire’s finest nod to vegetarian food at one of Bradford’s Best Indian Restaurants
Cooking up spectacular regional cuisine in the style of Gujarat and south Indian, eating vegetarian at Prashad in Bradford was something to behold. Standing proud as being the only 2AA Rosette Award winning Indian restaurant in Yorkshire, alarm bells immediately start ringing that there’s likely to be something special being served up at a restaurant which has had over 20 years in the making and handed down through three generations of the same family. If that simply wasn’t enough, in 2016 Prashad took home Restaurant of the Year in Welcome to Yorkshire’s White Rose Award and before that, running up second in Gordon Ramsey’s Best Restaurant.
Having arrived at our seats, the service from the beginning was attentive, carefully orchestrated and effortless in dealing with each of our questions. We were given menus, a selection of drinks and a stand out pickle tray (which included a fantastic Yorkshire rhubarb) and poppadoms. From Mausmi Ghota (crisp bread with ginger and seasonal vegetables) to Sabzi Shami, a mixed vegetable and lentil kebab, we were simply spoilt for choice. For starters, we settled with a Lasaan Paneer Tikka and a Khanda Bhaji. It needs to be said here that head chef Minal has worked hard with suppliers to bring the very best in locally sourced produce. Her efforts have paid off spectacularly in the utter delight her food brings to the palate. The Khanda Bhaji for example was light and delicate, it didn’t have that heavy feeling some bhajis leave behind. This meant full attention was given to the subtle flavours and mix of spice which are much loved in Indian food.
Marinated with fenugreek, onions and tomato, we ordered a Paneer Masala and a vegetable Kofta with caraway and tomato base for main course. Packed with herbs and spices, and like the food and which had come before, both were an explosion of fondness we were now very much accustomed to. The tomato sauce was rich, the kofta’s were truly satisfying and the masala tasted amazing with accompaniments of leavened garlic and chilli naan, and basmati rice infused with cumin and onion. With our adventure through regional India almost over, we ordered date and ginger and chocolate and orange ice cream for dessert. This and the mango sorbet made for an excellent end to an evening at Prashad Bradford.
This isn’t a place solely for the vegetarians amongst us; this is a place for people who are serious about good food. It is an experience in regional cooking which cannot be underestimated. This is about everything you might think about vegetarian food and turning it on its head. If you try an Indian restaurant soon, make sure it is a visit to Prashad.
