Stockdales of Yorkshire Leeds Review
Located in impressive Grade II listed surroundings, we arrived at Stockdales of Yorkshire on East Parade in the heart of Leeds city centre, to try out their six-course Wagyu Tasting Supper Club. Known for its supreme quality and that distinct marbling, Wagyu beef is nothing short of a food lovers dream, we couldn’t wait to try out what Stockdales had in store.
Having been greeted with a warm reception, we were swiftly taken to our seats to be presented with our first course of sourdough and beef dripping. Wedges of warm sourdough bread with a bowl of sumptuous beef dripping had us scrambling for more. Alongside this, and listed on the evening’s menu was a beef tea with Madeira and tarragon. Delicately served in tiny teacups, the flavour was nothing short of outstanding. We sipped away whilst savouring the big flavours of beef, Madeira and tarragon. The beef tea and sourdough served an excellent sign of things to come.
Next up, we were served deliciously smooth Wagyu beef croquettes with sorrel and aioli. Attentive throughout, Stockdales of Yorkshire presented us each with a wine tasting for each course. It almost became difficult to not be impressively overwhelmed with all the brilliant flavours. Mixed with white and red and carefully selected for each course, each wine paired perfectly with the food. For instance the subtle notes of South African Journeys End Haystack, Chardonnay 2014 worked well with the rich wagyu croquettes of sorrel and aioli.
Considered as the crowning jewel in beef, Wagyu is a breed like no other. Reared locally in Yorkshire, Stockdales have sourced the best in prime beef. The attention to quality was evident in each course, and this next one was no different. Cut like butter, we were served a rare Wagyu sirloin with smoked clams, pink fir apple and samphire. Picture perfect and surf meets turf, the pairings, here again, were truly excellent.
A braised Wagyu beef featherblade came next with a nice surprise of cavolo nero hidden underneath, alongside a seasonally matched roasted artichoke and puree of pumpkin. The featherblade cut exactly as you might imagine from something slow cooked in this way, the beef around it fell apart and with each mouthful igniting flavours which would be hard to match. With such a grand weight of flavour in front of us, a 2014 Esquinas de Argento Malbec could not have been a better choice. Steeped in flavour with dark fruits, the two were an ideal match.
Last up was a dark chocolate pave. Like everything before, the dessert was rich in flavour, but by no means was this overpowering. A tartness delivered in the red wine poached pears again cemented that Stockdale’s menu has been well planned, thought through and designed with each flavour in mind.
We finished the night’s menu in complete agreement that the food had been nothing short of fantastic. A selection of handmade petit fours of cherry and chocolate truffle made for an excellent end to what had been an impressive experience of the best in Yorkshire Wagyu beef.
Events like this are not uncommon for Stockdales of Yorkshire. It would be almost impossible for us not return to another of their fabulous evenings given the quality of what we’d experienced. Plus with a mouthwatering a la carte menu and roast Wagyu beef topside on their Sunday lunch menu, we were quick to decide that a return visit would be sooner rather than later.
