Robatary Wakefield Review – Robatary Restaurant – Wakefield Best Restaurants –

Review: Robatary Wakefield

Situated on Northgate where the former Qubana restaurant used to be before moving into the old Barclays Bank, the restaurant looks completely unrecognisable with a new entrance and bar area. Robatary would not look out of place alongside some of Leeds stylish new openings such as Issho and East 59th both in the iconic Victoria Gate. It’s absolutely stunning with a contemporary use of materials alongside a clever use of space to create one of the best-looking venues in the area.

Due to its style the restaurant is full of atmosphere, aided by the soundtrack of laid-back house music. Our visit was already shaping up to be the perfect weekend treat. Every detail has been meticulously thought about with no expense spared.

Not long after we sat down to our table, Gareth the Restaurant Manager introduced some of the interesting beers both local and global, together with an impressive wine list all served by the glass thanks to their in-house preservation system. The list of draughts, bottles and cans covers all bases well, opting for a super refreshing Tailgate Grapefruit IPA that got the afternoon off to a great start.

With so many great dishes to choose from we really were stuck for choice.  With options to order snacks, a sharing style small plate selection or the usual 3 courses, including plenty of dishes for vegans and vegetarians alike.

Sunday Lunch with Wine for Two At Robatary Wakefield

We started off with a salad of whipped goats curd, oranges, toasted nuts, coal roasted beetroot and dressed leaves. Literally sunshine on a plate with the selection of healthy ingredients.

Our next starter perfectly showcased the smoky flavour of the robata grill. With two huge skewers of chicken tikka and beef satay, served with a cooling mint yoghurt to balance the heat and smoke.

Deciding mains was another difficult choice with the menu split between land, sea and earth, alongside an epic selection of meat and fish all cooked over the hot robata coals and very generously priced too. The porterhouse steak coming in at a very reasonable £23, the same cut in most Leeds restaurants sees the price nearly double.

Sticking with the healthy choice I opted for the paprika rubbed stone bass fillet. A thick, meaty piece of fish with just enough heat and spice, together with wild rice, fresh peas, samphire and a generous courgette, pepper and scallop skewer. We really did not need to order sides too, but the roasted tender stem broccoli with toasted almonds and a huge portion of triple cooked fries was a welcome addition.

On the other side of the table, perfectly cooked tuna steak salad served with fresh avocado salsa, samphire, green beans and charcoal mayonnaise. Clean eating cooked well, and another really good sized main course. Feeling pretty stuffed it was a choice between another drink or the dessert menu. Thankfully the waiter gave a great introduction to what was on offer with a really interesting selection of classic desserts but with a Robatary twist.

First up the key lime tart served with a boozy slab of rum-soaked pineapple, fresh from the charcoal grill. Served with a rich clotted cream and biscuit crumb, finished with a sharp citrus burst of candied lime.

Another great dessert and a bit of envy on my part when I’d tasted the deconstructed strawberry and basil cheesecake. Finished with poached strawberries, vanilla ice cream and balsamic glaze, both dishes not too heavy but full of flavour.

Robatary Wakefield Review

Robatary is a fantastic addition to Wakefield’s dining scene and is unique in its offering for this area. A restaurant that makes you want to turn up as stylish as its surroundings but with food that showcases substance as well as style. With a regularly changing menu, great service and atmosphere to match, we’re looking forward to returning very soon to sample more delicious food from the robata grill.
