Yorkshire AA Rosette restaurants added and removed in 2024 (so far)

It might only be February, but the inspectors at the AA Restaurant Guide have certainly been keeping themselves busy – with six new Yorkshire restaurants already added this year.

Suffice to say, 2024 looks set to be a big year for Yorkshire restaurants – with our county already appearing to dominate the new guide.

As well as the six new additions, plenty of existing AA Yorkshire restaurants have also been upgraded – including Shaun Rankin at Grantley Hall, Ripon, which has recently been elevated from three rosettes to four.

New Yorkshire restaurants added to the AA Guide

Over in Doncaster, the owners of DN1 Delicatessen and Dining Room revealed that they had been awarded two rosettes by an AA inspector.

Small plates restaurant Origin Social in Northallerton has been added in a coup for the market town, whilst The Butcher’s Arms at Holmfirth, first added in October 2023, has been upgraded from no rosettes to one.

The Old Deanery in Ripon has also been added to the AA Rosette Guide, as has Indian fine dining restaurant Ruthvika Spices and Kitchen near Hull.

Pignut in Helmsley has been upgraded to two rosettes after first being added to the guide last year, whilst other new additions and upgradings include: West 10 Bar & Kitchen, Sheffield; Forge, Middleton Lodge Estate (no rosettes to three); Bar & Restaurant Eighty-Eight, Ripon (one rosette to two); Shaun Rankin at Grantley Hall (three rosettes to four); Legacy at The Grand, York (two rosettes to three); 1864, Driffield (two rosettes); The Judge’s Lodging, York (three rosettes to two).

Speaking on his recent upgrading, Shaun Rankin from Shaun Rankin at Grantley Hall commented: “This is a testament to the dedication and passion of our incredible team. It’s a reminder that excellence is not a destination, but a continuous journey of crafting unforgettable dining experiences, one plate at a time.”

Restaurants in the guide are regularly re-inspected, with Rosette allocations susceptible to change with the turnover of chefs and management teams.

Yorkshire restaurants removed from the AA Guide

Three now-closed Yorkshire restaurants – The Man Behind The Curtain in Leeds, The General Tarleton in Knaresborough and The Rattle Owl in York – have been removed from the guide. Michael O’Hare’s The Man Behind The Curtain, which has also lost its Michelin star, is now set for a rebrand as Psycho Sandbar.

Other downgradings and removals include: The Worsley Arms Hotel in Hovingham (two rosettes to none); Mallyan Spout Hotel in Goathland (one rosette to none).

The initial AA Rosette restaurants award was given out in 1956, marking the beginning of a national programme to rate the calibre of cuisine provided by hotels and restaurants. Being an award, not a classification, the Rosettes are given out annually after a visit by one or more of their inspectors.
