Once loved Leeds pub, The Reliance to reopen as The Smithfield

Much anticipated exciting news for Leeds’ foodie scene, as what was once The Reliance is being renovated into a new social eatery, named The Smithfield.

We can’t wait for new life to be breathed into a much-missed Leeds pub.

Opening its doors to the people of Leeds in early April, expect a casual, produce-led dining experience on North Street.

This is an exciting collaborative project between Yorkshire brewery Crooked Brewing and chef James Donovan, drawing on their shared passion for local connection.

The new venue hopes to pay homage to the local area through both its produce and people.

Focusing on proper plates of seasonal ingredients, pairing a relaxed dining style with a strong sense of community.

Steve Dawson, co-founder of Crooked Brewing, has long admired The Reliance, recalling how he often stopped by on his way back home from work.

Both partners are keen to build on the legacy of The Reliance.

Chef James Donovan says, “What The Reliance was doing was cutting edge for its time. We want to bring that same vision and energy into Leeds in 2026.”

Community sits at the heart of The Smithfield’s ethos, with the team keen to create a welcoming space for neighbours and locals alike.

Co-founder of Crooked Brewing, Steve Dawson, said: “Our aim is to pick up the culinary torch that The Reliance left behind and continue its legacy of great food in Leeds.”

We really want the people around us to feel that The Smithfield is their space, and we want to give them a place at our table.”

Crème Brulee The Smithfield

The new venue is said to open early April, and we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled to see when we can pay our first visit to The Smithfield.
