Pledwick Wakefield Review: Raising the Gastro Pub Bar for Wakefield
With the huge popularity of Newmillerdam’s Lakeside Cafe and Bistro, it was only a matter of time before the expansion plans were underway. Thankfully for the area, the team behind one of Wakefield’s favourite lunch and evening spots, chose somewhere just down the road.
The Pledwick Well Inn has seen quite a few landlords over the recent years but none managing to stay long enough to make the place work. With a lick of paint here and a slight menu change there, but nothing to show that any of the previous occupants were there to make a difference to such a great location. This is where the Lakeside family team have really stepped up.
Upon our recent visit, the place was instantly unrecognisable. Outside areas thoroughly revamped with new furniture and a complete overhaul of the building’s exterior. The inside bar and restaurant completely different to the dated chandeliers, carpets and dark wood furniture of before. Enlisting the expertise of an interior designer the venue now has a modern, industrial feel that’s really brought the venue up to date.
The bar also has a fresh new take with premium craft ales and a dedicated prosecco and cocktail area, perfect for any occasion. With Chef and Owner John Coxon’s career in the hospitality industry, he’s really understood the customer’s needs when choosing the dishes on the menu and some of the best locally sourced ingredients to accompany them.
There’s a great choice of gastropub classics to choose from, we opted to start with the Ploughman’s sharing board. With a mixture of Yorkshire cheeses, pate, local hams and a delicious pork pie from multi-award winning butchers, Lishman’s of Ilkley. A vast selection and great value for only £14.
Another tough choice when deciding our main course, after seeing some of the guests tucking into the short rib of beef and creamy mash, to mighty haddock and chips, it really got our taste buds flowing. I chose the chargrilled fillet steak served with scallops, king prawns, confit potato and a spicy red pepper coulis. Perfectly cooked steak and seafood with the spicy red pepper adding a delicious kick to the dish. The ultimate surf and turf!
Going on recommendation my partner ordered a hearty smoked haddock and chive risotto. Generous chunks of fish in a rich creamy sauce finished with Parmesan shavings, peppery rocket and a soft poached egg. Another great dish.
After finishing our mains and that impressive Ploughman’s sharer to start, unfortunately, we couldn’t manage desserts. The menu looked so tempting too. From brioche bread and butter pudding, vanilla cheesecake and sticky toffee pudding to name a few. Definitely, a reason to return soon.
Like their menu the venue caters for all, making it a comfortable spot for family or friends, relaxing with an after work drink or enjoying live entertainment on a Thursday evening. The Pledwick Well Inn has been crying out for the right owners for a good few years and thankfully John and the team have really instilled a new lease of life to this fantastic venue.
