Sir Dukes Bar & Grill Wetherby Review: 'Debauchery at the butchery' and so much more

At Sir Dukes Bar & Grill in Wetherby, their aim is pretty simple…they want to become Yorkshire’s favourite steakhouse. Known for their high quality produce, mighty sharing boards and quirky setting, we had to pay a visit to sample their amazing menu.
Four of us visited for a Friday lunch time treat, ready to feast on the juicy steaks ahead. From the outside of the restaurant not much about their style is given away until you enter, feeling like you have stepped into somewhere different and exciting. Quirky décor with random and interesting decorations everywhere, cool music and full of atmosphere.
Greeted by their lovely Restaurant Manger Tina, she explained the different menus available, including their a la carte and set lunch menu. From their hanger steak to catch of the day and various sharing boards we were spoilt for choice. Feeling like we were ready to indulge we went straight for the a la carte menu, eyes going first to their meaty sharing boards.
Starters first though and going on Tina’s recommendation, I choose the ‘Seared scallops, herb risotto, smoked bacon crumb’ and my partner opted for the ‘Treacle cured halibut with beetroot textures with horseradish cream’. Wow, browsing through Sir Dukes social media the mains are the star of the show, but the starters are not to be overlooked. The juicy scallops were beautifully presented in a scallop shell, hidden within delicious risotto, with a crunchy bacon topping and creamy mash surprise underneath the shell. I did not want to share this one! My partner’s was a lighter and again beautifully presented dish, with a celebration of beetroot and delicious dollops of horseradish cream to complement the treacle cured halibut and give it an added sharpness.
Upon looking at the menu the sharing boards may seem pricey however, when you factor in the amount you get which is always important for us Yorkshire folk and most importantly that the meat comes from award winning butchers Farmison & Co (based in Ripon) who have a big reputation among chefs for heritage rare breed herds and flocks from the Yorkshire Dales, then it’s well worth the price tag.
Arriving at the table two huge sharing boards;
DEBAUCHERY AT THE BUTCHERY
10oz rump cap, garlic and thyme Nidderdale chicken, 4 Swalesdale lamb chops Yorkshire black pudding, wild boar sausages, wild boar runny scotch duck egg, apple crumble, picked onion rings, fries, peppercorn sauce & stout mustard. £57.95
LE CHATEAUBRIAND
20oz dry aged Chateaubriand garlic and parsley mushrooms, spinach, confit vine tomato & roast garlic. Served with fries, peppercorn and bordelaise sauce. £77.50
The ‘Debauchery at the butchery’ really showed off the quality of Sir Dukes produce. Perfectly cooked and rested. Melt in the mouth lamb, beasty sausages, juicy chicken and steak and lots of delicious sides to complement, even the skin on chips were tasty!
Now to ‘Le Chateaubriand’, mouth-watering just thinking about this again. Generous cuts of beautifully cooked medium-rare fillet steak, nestled amongst watercress, spinach, mushrooms and tomatoes, a low carb feast delight (minus the fries…). The bordelaise sauce, dry red wine, bone marrow, butter, shallots and demi-glace sauce was to die for.
Fully stuffed, although tempted we couldn’t fit in dessert. From our experience we can see why Sir Dukes is a firm favourite, with their quirky and atmospheric setting, friendly and knowledgeable staff and quality produce that is beautifully presented. We’re looking forward to going back to sample their extensive drinks list. If you love steak then Sir Dukes has got to be at the top of your bucket list!
