Artisan bakery and specialty coffee shop opening in York, Heppni

Heppni Bakeri is new to the York food scene, opening its doors bright and early this Sunday, 14th July at 8 am.

Nestled on Swinegate, the artisan bakery will serve homemade pastries and specialty coffee.

Owner India Luck grew up in York and is excited to welcome everyone to this new foodie spot.

“I loved being a part of someone’s routine, even from a very young age, I could see how a really small interaction can totally change someone’s day, in a really lovely way”, she said.

Finding her first hospitality role at Shambles Kitchen at age 14 India has been hooked since.

However, it was during lockdown India unexpectedly fell into baking, with her friend opening Flori bakery in York, she started her patisserie journey just by stamping bags and making coffee.

This weekend, her dream of opening her own place, Heppni Bakeri York, is finally coming true.

“I loved working at bakeries, but I always wanted to create a bakery that was a total reflection of all the good things in life, wonderful people, delicious food, and a place that feels like a warm hug when you come in”, India says.

Customers can expect freshly baked viennoiserie pastry ( flaky pastry) croissants, pain au chocolat, almond croissants, seasonal fruit danishes, and more at Heppni in York. Paired with, of course, amazing coffee.

Taking inspiration from her travels, the baking style is predominantly French and Scandinavian, with a tickle of English charm.

Heppni team

The name ‘Heppni’ is a nod to India’s family, especially her three older brothers who have helped her get this beautiful new bakery to where it is today.

“The word Heppni means Luck in Old Norse, and Luck is my last name. I always wanted to name the bakery something that meant a lot to me”, she says.

After a lot of help from local tradesmen, her family, and friends, you can visit Heppni Bakeri, in York this weekend. Grab yourself a pastry – pups are welcome too!
