Where Chefs Eat: Shaun Rankin shares his favourite pubs, restaurants and dishes
//= get_the_date( 'dS F Y' ); ?>
Michelin-starred chef, TV personality and genuinely nice guy, Shaun Rankin has had an incredible career in the restaurant industry, spanning the height of the UK.
Now Chef Patron of Michelin-starred Shaun Rankin restaurant at Grantley Hall, he’s settled, and where else better than God’s own Country?
With amazing industry knowledge and a pioneer for modern British fine dining, we asked Shaun about his must-visit Yorkshire dining destinations, most memorable dishes and insider knowledge on up-and-coming spots.
Chef Shaun Rankin’s favourite Yorkshire restaurants

Shaun Rankin’s favourite pubs
“I’d start at The Grantley Arms for a great steak and then The Star at Harome. Between those two, you’ve got some of the very best Yorkshire hospitality and cooking.”
Yorkshire, specifically North Yorkshire, is not short of incredible pubs, from the Tommy Banks empire to Grantley Hall’s very own Grantley Arms.

Hidden gem bakery in the Yorkshire Dales
Have you ever wondered what Chef Shaun Rankin has for breakfast?
“The Two Dales Bakery in Reeth is a must-try if you’re in the area. Their Pain de Campagne Sourdough is outstanding. I’ll always buy a fresh loaf for breakfast, either with some good butter and sea salt or poached eggs.”
His guilty pleasure?
Even Michelin-starred chefs have comfort food. When he’s not in the kitchen, you’ll find Shaun at the coast tucking into a British classic that, dare I say, Yorkshire do best.
“I love heading over to Whitby for fish and chips, doused in vinegar. It’s a classic that’s hard to beat, especially by the coast. I always go to the Magpie café. The fish is super fresh with a light batter. I love taking my kids there after a walk down the harbour.”

Up-and-coming places and restaurants
We asked Shaun who and where we should be keeping an eye on in Yorkshire, and with his wealth of experience, we knew he’d have plenty of insider knowledge.
“Brayden at The Box Tree is definitely one to watch. I’m convinced he has what it takes to lead Yorkshire’s next Michelin-starred restaurant.”
After a significant refurbishment and a £500,000 investment in The Box Tree’s future, we are eager to hold Shaun to this prediction and see where Head Chef Brayden Davies takes it.
Yorkshire gained two Michelin stars this year, and the restaurant scene is becoming more impressive as time goes on. But where does Shaun think is thriving in particular?
“I think North Yorkshire is really thriving, particularly around Ripon and the surrounding countryside. There’s a great mix of established restaurants and ambitious young chefs. The drive home can sometimes be a bit longer, but it’s always worth it.”
JÖRO, one of the two new Michelin-starred restaurants in Yorkshire, is on Shaun’s must-visit list. With its innovative small plates inspired by Nordic and Japanese cuisine, we can see why.
“I’ve been meaning to visit JÖRO since Luke French reopened the restaurant. It’s right at the top of my list, and I’m really looking forward to getting there.”
Unmissable Yorkshire events
Selling out time and time again, The Great Yorkshire Show is an incredible excuse for Yorkshire producers, farmers and businesses to get together and showcase the provenance of the region.
“I try to get to the Great Yorkshire Show every year. It’s a brilliant day out with the family and also a good chance to catch up with farmers and producers. I always leave feeling inspired, having spent the day with people who are just as passionate about Yorkshire food as I am.”
Chef Shaun Rankin’s stand-out dishes
When asked Shaun about a stand-out dish of his, there was no hesitation.
“A visit to The Star Inn at Harome, to see my good friend Andrew Pern, is always a treat. He has a brilliant sense for flavour pairings, like his signature black pudding and foie gras dish. It’s a winner every time, really rich and buttery.”

Shaun Rankin at Grantley Hall
Shaun’s passion project, Michelin-starred Shaun Rankin at Grantley Hall, where he is now, deserves special recognition. He played a pivotal role in developing the three restaurants at Grantley Hall, from the kitchens and back-of-house areas to the china on the tables.
Shaun Rankin at Grantley Hall embraces a sustainable fine dining concept that highlights the very best of local and seasonal produce, showcasing ingredients sourced directly from the hotel’s kitchen garden and the surrounding areas.
It is a must-try, and just like Shaun, a real asset to Yorkshire.
